Description Felix Miata 2008-07-14 20:49:07 UTC
Version: (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources
OS: Linux

With fresh installation of new user in KDE 3, the first Konsole menu item "Session" includes both "New Midnight Commander" and "New Root Midnight Commander", among other entries. In KDE4, the first item is "File" instead of "Session", which contains entries similar to KDE3's "Session", but none of them are Midnight Commander. None of the other menu items contain Midnight Commander either. Please correct this regression by putting Midnight Commander back in the menu somewhere.

Silly wizard lost various other info it requested. Report refers to konsole-4.0.98-2mdv2009.0 rpm, but I didn't see it in the KDE4 versions on Fedora 9 or SUSE 11.1 Factory either.

If you want a new type of session which launches Midnight Commander when started then you can create one via Settings -> Manage Profiles -> New Profile and enter "mc" in the Command field.

The "Root" and "Root Midnight Commander" types were dropped because I think it is inadvisable to encourage users to run entire sessions as root, as opposed to sudo-ing individual commands. Users are free to create their own root profiles if they want them - I just won't ship them out of the box.

What's all this manage profiles garbage? Why does "a" user need a profile? I don't want new/improved versions taking away functionality that KDE3 included by default, and I doubt anyone else does either. (see ancient unfixed bug 152761) Each new install gives me a set of defaults. The old KDE3 defaults were good, Now you're trying to tell me each time I have to do extra configuration, instead of everything just working nicely like KDE3 does? That KDE4 thinking/policy stinks.

KDE4 is molasses slow everyplace I've seen it so far, apparently on the assumption of hardware not 3 or more years old. I might as well be using <choke>Gnome</choke> if I want less functionality by default along with less speed by default. I could even be using windoz if I wanted less. Give me back my KDE3. No wonder so many people are complaining about KDE4 on the mailing lists. :-(

I prefer root subsessions for performing root tasks instead of constantly being prompted for root passwords. The KDE3 creators understood that, and were smart enough to give people useful tools. No one forced people to use them.

KDE4 is replacing usefulness with cheesy glitz. I don't want any transparency, I want to see whatever's there in clear, legible constrast. No gloom 'n doom black/gray theming. No silly scolling menus. KDE4 is major disappointment. The future looks grim getting an immediate wontfix on something like this.

The other day I was thinking it was finally time to install virtual box and run OS/2 under KDE instead of the original live. Now I think I'll just have to forget that idea, as KDE4 is obviously not intended for KDE3 users. I'll just keep on keeping on with the oldest living & still best desktop if 2nd best is going to keep on a track to less good than before instead of striving to reach the #1 spot that used to seem within reach.

I am one developer out of around 200 who is currently involved with KDE. Please do not generalize a response to one bug report by one developer to the whole project.

To clarify why this is marked as "WONTFIX" (which I admit, sounds harsh), reading back through the many KDE 3 bug reports and the survey I conducted last year it is clear that:

- Everyone wants to see something slightly different in the default list of sessions because they all do different work with the terminal or have different preferences. So instead of providing a list of sessions I focused on making it much easier to create and manage custom session types.
- There are many bug reports going back over the years and responses in the survey suggesting that users (especially new ones) found it hard to set up Konsole and save/restore that setup. There were also a number of problems where features were duplicated in different places and behaved differently depending on how they were invoked. I tried to streamline the UI to minimize duplication and make it easier for new users to find things. There are actually very few options which have been removed entirely deliberately and a raft of new options and features which have been added. If you're looking for new features that are not just 'glitz' I would point you to split view, dynamic tab/window titles, incremental search, tab drag-and-drop, key bindings and colour scheme editor, improved performance, shared settings between embedded terminal and Konsole application improved terminal emulation (esp. mouse support), more flexible duplication of input to other sessions and others.

Finally, I would of course mention that since we're not paid by individuals to work on KDE, threats to use an alternative carry limited gravitas. In fact, in the case of the terminal I encourage people to try alternatives and feed back to me, especially new and inventive ones (eg. HotWire).

KDE 4 applications are generally smooth and snappy on my 5 year old laptop with ancient Radeon M6 graphics and 512MB RAM. I spent some time making sure that Konsole is faster than the KDE 3 version. There is a serious known problem with NVidia which is affecting many users and also some issues with Plasma, Konsole and a few other applications which support transparency under some versions of the ATI open source drivers when compositing is enabled. As far as I know this is a driver and/or X.org problem which is being addressed.

There is a work in progress wiki page which addresses common KDE 4 performance problems:

From my point of view as a user, this bug is a waste of developers time and I think the reporter is quite rude about it. Why should the terminal emulator provide a default session for one specific archaic file manager?

I've never used midnight commander and don't intend to, I definitely don't want it cluttering up the menu's on my system. It takes about 30 seconds to set up a profile to run any application you want.
