Version: 1.0.99 (using 4.00.83 (KDE 4.0.83 (KDE 4.1 Beta2), Kubuntu packages) Compiler: cc OS: Linux (x86_64) release 2.6.26-2-generic Running KDE4.1 in Kubuntu Intrepid Alpha1 64 bit on AMD64 PC. Opened up Dolphin, clicked on a text document so that Kate opens and displays contents. Closed file via Close icon or via file menu. Now closed Kate via close window (x top rhs). Sorry Dolphin message box now displayed - KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate'.

Status: RESOLVED ???? No, no. This bug is still alive in KDE4.2 KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate' Qt: 4.4.3 KDE: 4.2.00 (KDE 4.2.0)
@L_V: Could you please let us know which distribution packages do you use? Thanks!
I have the messsage "KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate'" with kate Version 4:4.2.0-1 when I try to open a file with "kate --use %U". [ kdelibs5 Version : 4:4.2.0-3 ] Kate --use %U works fine, but, always a pop-up window claiming "KDEInit could not launch '/usr/bin/kate'" This is not coming from dolphin. Also tried different options like "X-DBUS-StartupType=none" in kate.desktop, but no success. + read https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/kde4libs/+bug/184337 on 2009-01-31 / "A developer said "It is a not-yet-hunted-and-killed bug in kdelibs".

Small update. I get this bug both in Debian SID+experimental, and ubuntu Jaunty (alpha). To be noticed that this same bug was already identified in 2005, and solved in KDE3 see Bug 119146: KDEInit could not launch 'kate' http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=119146
Just tried this in Kubuntu Alpha3 kernel 2.6.28-6 64bit, KDE version 4.2.00 and am unable to reproduce this fault. Same PC used as originally reported problem.
Of course, you need to open more than one file in the same Kate session to see this bug, using kate --use %U. This bug is known and reported at ubuntu, but also exists in Debian, then seems to be generic.
