Description bkorb 2008-06-30 18:21:32 UTC
Version: 4.0.4 (using KDE 4.0.4)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

One would reasonably expect that "configure desktop" or "system settings"
would get you somewhere where you could turn off the annoying noises.
The most obvious choice being "notifications" and next obvious "sounds".
Neither work. Using "system bell" (see bug 79108) does not get around
the problem either.

So, whether the problem is because there is no way to turn off the feature,
or whether the problem is because I did not find where it got hidden,
there _is_ a problem in that it is too hard if not impossible to turn
off irritating little noises.

Some notifications has removed in current trunk, could you try to update to the newest 4.1-beta2 and check if the situation is better for you?

Thanks a lot!
Comment 2 bkorb 2008-06-30 18:52:20 UTC
No. Sorry. I need to solve one problem at a time.
I'm probably going to drop back to an earlier release by
installint SuSE 10.3 because sshd got fowled up, too.
(Cannot use RemoteForward to tunnel through a firewall.)
Comment 3 bkorb 2008-06-30 19:28:01 UTC
As long as I'm griping about KDE4, how about hiding the control panel?
I normally have it set up to "auto hide" and pop back up when I push the
cursor into the corner. The panel settings only allow me to change
size and location. Not what I want. I want it hidden. Entirely.
Would you-all like a different bug report? Thanks - Bruce

No, don't worry, it has already been requested.

Do you agree on closing this report?
Comment 5 bkorb 2008-06-30 21:10:59 UTC
This report should be closed *IF* turning off sound effects can be found via one
of the two "configure desktop" functions, (*WHY* are there two? And why are
they completely different?) *AND* if that turns off _all_ desktop action sound
effects. In other words, if I were to switch to the beta desktop, I don't think
it's all fixed yet. Sorry.
Comment 6 bkorb 2008-06-30 22:00:23 UTC
Oh, God, I've made a _horrible_ mistake. I clicked on "desktop effects"
because mouseover was not activating windows quite right. Now my dozen
desk tops have been collapsed into one desk top and I have to click to
focus and I cannot find my way back. Why can't I just find this stuff
under "configure desktop"? Why must this be so hard? (I have tried
going back to "desktop effects" and found it already disabled. There is
apparently no way to disable the thing once you've made the mistake of
enabling it.)

Can't *you* be _ranting_ on YOUR own "blog", please.
Comment 8 bkorb 2008-07-01 02:17:42 UTC
Well, I did find the right click on the panel to restore multi-desktops.
However, as far as I can tell, I have to blow away my account and
re-create it in order to restore focus-follows-mouse. I have set
focus-follows-mouse-strict, but it has no effect. And I have no idea why.
Yes, I ranted. I do not like spending two days on what is normally a
two or three hour process. Most of the issues seem to be unresolvable.
Comment 9 FiNeX 2008-07-01 09:41:15 UTC
I've just tested trunk:
some messageboxes with questions still reproduce a sound which is not possible to disable (for example when you swith between system settings modules without apply changes).

Any news on this?
Comment 11 bkorb 2009-01-09 19:16:58 UTC
I've dropped back to KDE 3.5. If the time comes that 3.5 is no longer available,
I'll have to decide how to go forward. Right now, 4.x does not seem like a
good choice. I hope things improve. Sorry.
