Description aapgorilla 2008-06-30 08:38:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.83)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Please get rid of that highlight with toolbox thing around the icons and plasmoids on the desktop or make an option to get rid of them

I have been using computers for over 20 years and many different desktop enviroments but it took me about several hours and tries at installing, trying and uninstalling kde4 in frustration because I couldnt figure out how to move a simple icon on the desktop and even now when I have figured it out I am only about 50% succesful because it is so difficult to time and target (especially with a touchpad). Besides that I find it to be visually very distracting.

Please make it an option to have a simple left click anywhere on the icon to grap, move, release left button and drop.... and a right click to resize, remove etc... and turn of the toolbox and vista like highlight altogether, a simple glow will do....

try folderview in 4.1, see if that's easier for icons.
as for rightclick, it's not accessible enough (you mentioned a touchpad; those often don't have rightclick at all). the frames around plasmoids stay.

we recently had a discussion about moving plasmoids... basically those that can be moved by clicking anywhere should, and those that really can't will rely on the frame.

visually, you can get rid of them with 'lock widgets'.

actually, the clock was recently fixed so that you can both drag and click it from anywhere. maybe a similar fix could be applied to other plasmoids?

>as for rightclick, it's not accessible enough (you mentioned a touchpad; those often don't have rightclick at all). the frames around plasmoids stay.

only macs don't have them the rest of the world does and I want to use my right click button (and wheel/middle click), I don't have these buttons for no reason.

(btw, the absence of a right click button is the reason I recently didnt by a macbook but a "normal" laptop. I have to use a mac at uni and it's so annoying not to have a right click menu and instead having to do these tiresome workarounds)

>visually, you can get rid of them with 'lock widgets'.

how and none of the plasmoids seem to have a right click context menu so getting rid of the frame leaves them without configuration options.

I always thought KDE was about having choice (unlike that *other* opensource desktop enviroment)

Closing with later.

Some solutions are already being discussed and will appear in plasma as soon as everything is defined / approved / developed / tested.

the 'lock widgets' action shows up all over the place.
one of the many ways to reach it: right click on the desktop -> 'lock widgets'

what are you talking about? *every* plasmoid has a contextmenu.

if you keep making comments like that, I'll just ignore you and stop trying to
help at all.

i found that 'odd'. as i don't have a macbook myself, but was pretty sure its something thats available.... its def available with a desktop osx.

google found lots of goodies...
http://wpram.com/log/2006/06/02/right_click_on/
that article was posted in 2006.
osx and macbooks have been revised a bit since.

but your comments on plasma. i'm having a difficult time understanding and reproducing your issues with 4.1 beta.

less on giving your 'resume' and more on steps would be helpful. are you talking about a specific plasmoid like folder view or plasmoids in general?
i find sufficient right click options for all.

but as chani stated, right clicks are available for all plasmoids i've seen. at least the ones from kde devels.

if i was a plasma dev looking at this, i'd have a hard time figuring out what your asking to add or fix.

that little handle around every plasmoid seems a bit, how could i say... (out of place/frail thing, maybe)

Maybe we could use a totally new way to manage plasmoids:
I'll try to explain my idea (don't attack me please, these are just my 2 cents :)
For the desktop containment we could add a button «only in the Dashboard view» called «Manage plasmoids» that, when clicked would show a frame around plasmoids, just like those in koffice when managing images with the usual 8 handles (NW, N, NE, E, SE, S, SW, W) with usual shotcurts to rotate/resize them
This will be a new way of managing plasmoids but a way that the user easily could get used to.
