Description lejocelyn 2008-06-23 22:36:06 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.4)
Installed from: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux

Screencast are more and more used and a lot of free software (recordmydesktop qt/gtk, Istanbul,Xvidcap, ... ) do the job well, but, I think it would be great to have this kind of tool in the Desktop environment for a better integration.

When the user hits the key "print screen", he should be able to chose between screenshot or screencast. I think the user should still bhe able to select the "Capture mode" for the video, so, for the user, "just" a button under "New Snapshot" could make it.

There is a desktop effect for that : "video record" is what you need ? (activate the desktop effects then "all plugins" tab and it is in the misc section).

If it doesn't exist, please consider updating your KDE version.

@krop: and if an user doesn't use desktop effects?
Comment 3 Christophe Marin 2008-06-24 10:32:06 UTC
You can disable all the candy effects and just keep this one. Where would be the problem ?

I think it's more a usability problem, the option should be integrated
in the software that handle the "print screen" key.
Why putting the fonction in Desktop effect ? who will look for it there ? O_o

What is the usability benefit to add a video recorder implementation to an application called Ksnapshot ? (which, in my mind, is supposed to take snapshots, not videos).

Well, who care about the utility name ? the idea is that someone who
wants to record
info on its screen should be able to chose between screenshot or screencast.

This isn't really ksnapshot's job, so I'm going to close this. I do take the point however that the screencast functionality in kwin isn't obvious enough. Maybe the best solution would be to file a bug there asking for an easier way to access that?
