Version: (using KDE 4.0.80) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages I have experienced the same as in Bug #63353 with Disconnected IMAP under Kmail 1.9.51 (KDE 4, 1st beta), *except* that I lost emails even if Kontact didn't crash (and if it crashes, Kmail deletes unread emails from the server! So there's no way to recover them). If you cannot reproduce it, I can provide you with an email account at my server; I don't know if it's an issue specific to my server-side IMAP software and Kmail. ***** Please ***** Also mark [Disconnected] IMAP support as experimental/unreliable/use-it-at-your-own-risk.
Please provide steps to reproduce the problem (the other bug report is rather old and probably a mix of all kind of problems). Are you using filters? Do you loose every mail or just some mails? If you loose only some mails, which do you loose? When do you loose mails? When synchronizing or when doing other actions? Providing minimal steps to help us reprodcue the problem would be really appreciated. The best way would be to start with a new config (for example with a new user) and a new mail account, and then finding a way to reliably reproduce the problem.
Created attachment 25522 [details] My Kmail filters This is the export from my Kmail filters. Out of all these filters, I am sure I've been loosing emails from the following ones: - #10. - #13. - #4. - #7 - I'm absolutely sure about this one. - #9.
Hi, Thomas. Unfortunately it's hard to tell how to reproduce it. I have been using its IMAP support for almost two weeks now and I was just /suspecting/ that I was loosing emails, until some hours ago I saw how Kmail deleted all of my new emails after a crash. The emails I manually marked as "unread" were not deleted. Most of the emails I'm aware I've lost are affected by filters, which I've attached to this bug. But I suspect I've also lost emails not affected by filters.
> Most of the emails I'm aware I've lost are affected by filters, which I've attached to this bug. But I suspect I've also lost emails not affected by filters. By "lost" I mean that I never received them, or got deleted before I could read them.
Here, maybe a way to reproduce (but maybe that’s another bug) : I had a similar problem due to incorrect antispam filter configuration. I believe I used the antispam wizard. At the time I had no antispam software (like bogofilter) on my box, but that did not prevent the wizard to end without complaining and setup bogus filters, where every new mail was considered spam and was sent to trash. First I thought I had a DIMAP synchronization problem, so I asked kmail to rebuild the cache. Big mistake. Every mail was considered as new and got "filtered". Technically every mail was not lost (though some were), but that can easily result in a true loss when the trash is emptied. This was with OpenSuse packages, version 4.0.82 (or maybe 80...).
Fortunately I've never experienced mail loss with KMail. I see you were using some KDE 4.1 pre-release. As far as I know some dIMAP related mail loss problems have been solved since then. Could you please retry with the latest release to see if the problem is still there? (possibly using a test-account) I think c#5 is completely unrelated and caused by a faulty spam filter configuration (not faulty due to the user but due to KMail).

I had the same problem with KDE 4.2.1 and I think I found the reason why it happened (I never tried to reproduce it). It was a quite huge mail I received (something like 6 MB) and I stoped kMail from downloading it before it was in my box. But instead of leaving the mail on the server it totally deleted the mail.
I'm also seeing a similar bug on: Qt: 4.4.3 KDE: 4.2.2 (KDE 4.2.2) KMail: 1.11.2 Debian packages. In my cases, no crashes, no obvious signed except a truncated INBOX.
If there is no further report, this may be closed. What is described in #5 I experienced too on a KDE 4.3. Is there already a bug for it?
I can confirm this bug in Kmail 1.12.4 - using disconnected imap and having kmail crash whilst kmail seemed to be in the process of checking for mail I find that all my emails are gone from the server (there seems to be a link between the crash and the loss of mail but I can't currently be sure of that). Qt: 4.5.3-4 KDE: 4.3.4-2 KMail: 1.12.4 Mepis 8.5 Fortunately I have a backup of the 10 years of mail that I have on this particular address as I was simply taking Mepis for a spin. I am more than happy to give the time to see if this bug can be confirmed as it would be very serious if someone didn't have a backup.
Hello, I have encountered a similar problem with KMail 1.13.5 (kubuntu-ppa kde 4.5.3): I use disconnected imap on home and work pcs. They are never on at the same time. Yesterday I asked my boss to send me an important mail again, because I could not find it, and I received it on my work pc. Later I went home and I turned on my pc and I noticed that the mail wasn't in my inbox, even after a manual sync. Today I turned on my work pc and I clearly saw that mail just after starting kmail, but after few seconds the mail disappeared. I looked for it with a search, but it was completely expunged. This is really a sever bug.
I just lost one e-mail from a gmail account. It arrived in the inbox and vanished when I moved it to another folder. I grepped the files on disk to no avail. Restoring it from the gmail web interface and trying to download it again does not work. This is on kontact 4.7.3.
Thank you for taking the time to file a bug report. KMail2 was released in 2011, and the entire code base went through significant changes. We are currently in the process of porting to Qt5 and KF5. It is unlikely that these bugs are still valid in KMail2. We welcome you to try out KMail 2 with the KDE 4.14 release and give your feedback.
