Description Janet 2008-05-10 17:37:09 UTC
Version: 4.0.71 (using Devel)
Installed from: Compiled sources

Though "Change pointer shape over icons" is activated in systemsettings it does not work. The cursor doesn't change at all when hovering over clickable items, neither in dolphin nor on the desktop, panel and so on. I'd expect the mouse cursor to change to a hand when hovering over a clickable item (icon or widget) to give the user more visible feedback like in KDE3 and this option looks like it is enabling that behaviour but doesn't.
Comment 1 Peter Paulsen 2008-07-30 12:02:07 UTC
I too think it's important to have this unitary feedback for all clickable items (like it was in KDE3) because the feedback that something is clickable by now is very inconsistent in KDE4 (frames, color change of icon, color change of background, nothing at all).

The problem still exists in KDE 4.1.0. The option is there but ticking it does not change anything. Or is it a kio or plasma problem? Either systemsettings contains an option for a (still?) not implemented feature (then please remove the option and assign the report to the devs responsible for reimplementing the feature) or systemsettings is not able to communicate with the corresponding feature.

@Peter: may this be a bug in Dolphin ? Thanks :)
Comment 3 Peter Penz 2008-12-30 20:09:51 UTC
Oh, I was not aware about this feature, that's the main reason why Dolphin does not support it yet :-) But I'm not sure whether this feature is really needed at all anymore. I think it is useful in web browsers, as it is not obvious whether an image is a link or a text is a link. But in Dolphin and the desktop there is already an hover indication which indicates that an item is clickable (you don't have a changed mouse cursor in the toolbar, menus or trees too). So from my personal point of view I'd drop this setting completely, but maybe I'm missing something.
Comment 4 Janet 2010-09-26 15:40:48 UTC
It would just be "nice" to have a consistent mouse cursor behaviour: clickable item = hand cursor. A mouse pointer shape changing is sometimes better to recognize than just a slight color blending, especially when you don't have that good eyes (yes, it's always the same with me ;) ). You then tend to want to rely on more than one change in look and want to have everything big and clear and loud and want things to react the same ;).

In KDE SC 4.6, the cursor shape changes to a hand when hovering the items. However, it doesn't seem to honor the Mouse settings in SystemSettings: the cursor shape appears even if "Change cursor shape" is disabled or "Double click" is enabled instead of "Single click"
Comment 8 Hans Chen 2011-01-29 14:12:00 UTC
Additionally, it only seems to affect Dolphin (and its KPart) - for example, the cursor doesn't change over icons in Folder View.
Comment 9 S 2011-03-17 07:29:33 UTC
Confirming this bug on KDE 4.6.1, openSUSE 11.4. I have enabled double-clicking files and folders, but it still shows a hand over files and folders in Dolphin.

Is there any workaround?

Thanks!

Of course, under the option "Automatically select icons" does not work!

There is still much to wait or continue to make us laugh for a few more years?
Sorry for the irony but when it takes it takes!

Now this is an old bug... I'm unable to find this in the current System Settings, is this still a feature?

Can you please test and confirm if this issue is still occurring or if this bug report can be marked as resolved. I've set the bug status to "needsinfo" pending your response, please change back to "reported" or "resolved" when you respond, thanks.
