The minimize and maximize effects in kde4 work quite well with the default desktop effects settings. However if one selects the 'Keep thumbnails of minimized windows up to date' from the advanced options in desktop effects, the minimize effect stops working, although the effect for maximizing the window works as before. The windows now minimize as they would if desktop effects are not enabled.
