Description ricardo_0617 2008-03-20 07:49:14 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

The KDE Control Center should be able to download and install automatically other languages. Many users just don't know what the hell is a package.

Thanks,

Ricardo Ramírez

On KDE4 kcontrol doesn't exist. It has been replaced by systemsettings.

Ok.. ok..
Whatever!!

Then systemsettings should be able to download and install automatically other languages.

KDE does not ship your distribution packages so I don't see how we could provide such a feature for all distributions.
I suggest that you ask your distribution to better name their packages descriptions or have a better package management program if you are not happy with it.

The spanish language pack of KDE is the same for all the linux distributions. I'm using openSuSE, but I got the language pack in a Mandriva DVD.

SystemSettings can also search for that package in the repositories of the distribution. You only would have to configure the most important ones like Red Hat, SuSE, Debian and Mandriva.

Hi

Every distribution packages the software in a different way, so this is not correct.

This is strange, you were lucky that it worked (only because OpenSUSE and Mandriva use the RPM format, but Debian/Ubuntu uses "DEB"..)

This could be considered.

Drive-by comment:

I don't think it would be implemented that way, that would be too much of a maintenance burden to keep track of every time each of the major distros changes their packaging structure or naming conventions or possibly even just bumps the package release number, and there would be complaints of discrimination from the smaller distros, and there would be issues with release cycles.

No, this would have to be something maintained by the distros themselves, but we could provide them with the framework to do so. The distro would have to provide a config file with a list of the languages they package, the names of the packages, and a template for the install command to issue (or use PackageKit if available). The distro would have to update this config file with every release they make.
