Description S. Burmeister 2008-02-24 12:16:57 UTC
Version: (using KDE 4.0.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

http://www.einfach-eee.de/ with konqueror scrolls very slow on a X2 4000+ and nvidia GS 7600 using the binary driver. XOrg uses one core with 100% while scrolling.

The same site works normal in firefox.

I can confirm the same issue here.
kubuntu x86_64 2.6.24-18-generic #1 SMP
nvidia GeForce 8500 GT (rev a1)
nvidia binary driver NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-173.14.05-pkg2.run
I can also confirm same thing for version 169 of the driver

I believe it's usually sites that contain quite a few images that scroll slowly.
Another example that I can give is http://www.photographyblog.com
konqueror3 works much smoother and faster scrolling those without probs.

I think it's sometimes much slower than other times, but those sites regularly go very slow.

I forgot, I use svn trunk myself, gcc, built with -O2

Can't reproduce on a much weaker machine with a 7100...
Comment 4 S. Burmeister 2008-06-22 08:42:24 UTC
Do you have desktop-effects enabled?

I also notice that when I use the scrollbar the scrolling is a lot smoother than when using the mousewheel, in my case pressing the middle-mouse-button and moving the mouse vertically.

I'm so glad somebody else could confirm this issue. :)

Disabling desktop effects does not seem to improve it in any manner.
I've done the same setup on a different, slower box (dual core x86_64,
rather than quad, with less RAM), and an intel gfx card (965 iirc, but
I'd need to confirm). It works without problems there.

Confirmed slow scrolling in SVN r827766 as compared to firefox, KDE3 konqueror, and arora. Perhaps this has to do with the smooth scrolling, which is not present in the other browsers I compared against? That might explain why grabbing the scrollbar is less intensive than the scrollwheel.

Hardware: P4 3.0 GHz, nvidia 7600GT (w/ binary driver 169.12)

Isn't this bug confirmed all over the place because of the proprietary nvidia driver?

see for example this forum post which even mentions KDE4 http://www.phoronix.com/forums/showthread.php?t=11044 .

I'm not claiming that it's nvidia's fault in this case, but could anyone try and use the open source driver (or some other driver) and see if it still happens?

Yes, nvidia-settings -a GlyphCache=1 seems to help these days. Sorry that I had forgotten to comment on that here

Not really a Konqueror bug if it affects Arora which is a pure Qt application. Anyhow, is this still an issue today ? With KDE v4.7.4 or higher or can this bug reported be closed ? According to comment #8, this seems to be a driver related issue, not even a Qt problem.
