Description patcito 2008-02-11 06:33:02 UTC
Version: 1.0.1 (using 4.0.1 (KDE 4.0.1), Kubuntu packages)
Compiler: gcc
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.22-14-generic

One of the feature I miss from konqueror is the ability to navigate by just "pasting" the content of the clipboard using the mouse wheel in the file browser (not in the url text field). In konqueror if I have "/some/path" in the clipboard and past it in the file list widget (or whatever the part of dolphin that contains the list of files and folders is called :)), Konqueror gets me to that path which is pretty cool IMO.

Thanks in advance for considering.

I like this feature too!

I'll implement this, but I cannot promise a target date yet...
Comment 3 Peter Penz 2008-04-24 08:53:09 UTC
Hmm, this request conflicts with the tab feature (= middle click opens new tab). Any ideas?
Comment 4 FiNeX 2008-04-24 09:26:32 UTC
Yes, simply do like konqueror.

- middle click on a file: open it in a new tab.
- middle click in a free region: go to the PATH in the clipboard (if any).

what do you think?

Thanks FiNeX, that for sure sounds reasonable :-)
Comment 6 FiNeX 2008-06-07 13:27:18 UTC
Looking on the SVN log, I've noted that it has been implemented this point:
«middle click in a free region: go to the PATH in the clipboard (if any).»

Will be implemented even the other point? («middle click on a file: open it in a new tab.»)

Fixed like suggested :-) Seems like I've a little bit lost the oversight about the open bugs lately, forgot to close this issue...

don't worry... :)

anyway, if you select a path like

/path/foo/bar/

you can go to that directory with middle click

now try to copy a path like

/path/foo/bar/file.txt

and do a middle click... this will send dolphin to that path, but the file will not be showed.

Moreover you've to manually copy a path. If you select a path with the mouse this will not be used, you need to do a CTRL+C (for example).

Thanks for testing, I'll check the remaining issues.

Hm, that should be out of scope of Dolphin. Dolphin just accesses the clipboard - anyhow I'll have to check this in detail :-)

Ok, and about opening files in dolphin tabs? Is it planned?
I think that it is not very useful because this task is already done by konqueror.

I'm not 100 % sure what you mean: opening directories in tabs is already supported, but Dolphin won't support opening files (PDF, images) embedded in tabs. Dolphin only shows directory content inside it's views. Was that your question? I agree: that is why we have Konqueror :-)
Comment 12 FiNeX 2008-06-07 16:36:44 UTC
Yes, I mean pdf, images, docs and so on... middle click on them shouldn't open them inside dolphin (if someone needs, there is konqueror).

What should happens with the middle click on a file like a pdf or an image?

Hmm, currently it is just opened inside the corresponding application. I guess this behavior is better than just doing nothing, but I'm not sure. So I'd leave this point as it is. What do you think?
Comment 14 FiNeX 2008-06-07 17:12:58 UTC
Usually it could be quite right...
but if you enable the archives browsing which allow you to consider .zip|.tar|... like a folder, when you middle click on an archive, you'll open it in the current tab, like left click, instead it should be opened in a new tab.

Moreover we're doing this test with the "one click" default settings.
If you enable the "double click" from the KDE global settings, there are some differences:
- middle click to open folder in a new tab doesn't work.
- double middle click on a folder opens it in a new tab
- middle click on a file (not directory) do nothing
- double middle click on a file (not directory) opens it in the right app

Anyway all this things are not related to this bug which at this point I consider fixed.

@dolphin-developers: do you wan I open a new bug report against this problem and close this?

This would be very welcome and it would be great if you could do this :-) Thanks in advance!

Middle Click on a folder/zip-archiv still opens a new tab, but pasting a directory-name on middle-click into the white nowhere beyond files does nothing in dolphin 15.12.3 ... this feature was lost over time?
Comment 18 TraceyC 2025-01-30 17:16:48 UTC
Since there was interest in this feature, but it stalled, I'll let the current Dolphin maintainers evaluate this.
