Version: krita 1.6.3 (using KDE KDE 3.5.8) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Compiler: ubuntu gutsy package OS: Linux I installed krita using ubuntu (64-bit gutsy) synaptic (running icewm as desktop, do not have kde installed). My computer is amd opteron on tyan server board, 4gb ram. I opened a jpeg, saved it as a tif, closed it, and reopened it. krita crashed trying to open the tif. I opened a tif created by a different program. krita crashed trying to open the tif. I keep trying to use krita, over the years. It keeps crashing. Most disappointing. ~$ krita kbuildsycoca running... kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 171 Major opcode: 149 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 X Error: BadDevice, invalid or uninitialized input device 171 Major opcode: 149 Minor opcode: 3 Resource id: 0x0 QPainter::begin: Cannot paint null pixmap QLayout "unnamed" added to QWidget "unnamed", which already has a layout kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found TIFFSetField: /media/edit/_mg_0180.tiff: Unknown pseudo-tag 65536. Have you any specific tiff file that you can attach ? I use ubuntu package too and didn't get a single crash with tiff files. And if you can give a backtrace (you will need to install koffice-dbg to get a meaningfull backtrace) either with gdb or drkonqi.
Dear Cyrille, I am surprised and pleased to hear from you. I have followed the development of krita for awhile now, because I want to see color-managed true 16-bit digital image processing capability under linux - I'm still looking for the "photoshop killer" application. I've used strictly windows os until a couple of months ago. But I need a 64-bit os to go with my 64-bit hardware and I will NOT go down the Vista route. So I would be happy to send you a tiff (Lou.tif should be attached to this email) and any debugging information you would like. I have been leary of installing the whole of kde because I am afraid of services running in the background that are difficult to get rid of - gnome brings a boatload of them - reminds me of windows. Which is why my ubuntu install was from a minimal net-install command-line only, with xorg and icewm etc added after the fact. Although I am new to linux, I am comfortable at the command line in general. I am trying to keep my linux install "lean and mean", leaving more ram and processing power for image editing. So let me run through the exact steps to produce the crash for you. And could you tell me the "smallest impact" way to get you your backtrace? Be specific - I am very much a linux newbie. Steps to crash krita: 1. icewm desktop. xfce4 terminal. Open terminal. 2. type "krita" in terminal to start krita. 3. navigate in krita to folder (not in home folder, if that matters) containing Lou.tif, an 8-bit sRGB tiff 4. open Lou.tif in krita: File, open /media/process/2besorted/Lou.tif 5. select Image, convert image type, target color space RGB 16-bit integer/channel Adobe RGB (or sRGB, doesn't matter, both will crash upon saving and reopening with krita), rendering intent perceptual 6. File, Save as "Lou 16-bit ARGB.tif TIFF" (without the quotes of course) Image TIFF Export Options - leave at defaults compression none, predictor none store alpha channel has default x and flatten the image (it's only one layer) has default x. click OK 7. File Close to close image file. 8. File Open Recent and pick file just closed "Lou 16-bit ARGB.tif" and krita crashes. Here is output from terminal: elle@rn:~$ krita kbuildsycoca running... kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found kio (KMimeType): WARNING: KServiceType::offers : servicetype ThumbCreator not found TIFFReadDirectory: Warning, /media/process/2besorted/Lou.tif: invalid TIFF directory; tags are not sorted in ascending order. "Lou.tif"created by xnview under windows in VirtualBox, ii. from a 415kb (email-sized) jpeg created by Zoombrowser under old windows 2000 install (since wiped off computer) iii. from a 16-bit prophoto psd created in Photoshop and flattened and saved as a tiff iv. from a raw file taken with a Canon 400d rebel 10megapixel camera and processed, I forget which, either with dcraw or adobe camera raw, into a 16-bit prophoto tiff to send to Photoshop Again, give me the "how to" for your backtrace and I will happily send it along to you. And also feel free to ask me to try "this or that" to see where/why krita is crashing. Or best of all, tell me what I'm doing wrong - I will be the first to admit that user error is always a possibility. By the way, the first tiff I opened, that immediately crashed krita, was not converted from 8-bit and then saved in krita, rather it came from photoshop. It was most likely a 16-bit prophoto tiff. Hi, For the file you will have to go through http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=155852 to add it to the bug tracker (or you can send it to me privately cyb@lepi.org if you preffer). As for getting the backtrace, once you have installed koffice-dbg, you can either get it from drkonqi (the dialog that show up when Krita crashes) or by running 'gdb krita' then type 'r' + enter then once krita crashes, type 'bt' + enter.
I did install koffice-dbg. As I said in my email to Cyrille (I sent him a copy of one of my tifs), when opening a tif, while running krita by typing "gdb krita" at the command line, krita hangs rather than crashes. drkonqi never shows up. So I installed kde-core and reinstalled krita. This is the result of attempting to open several different tiffs: The first tif, the "8-bit tif from bruce lindbloom", can be found on the internet here: http://www.brucelindbloom.com/? click on "Info", then choose "RGB Reference Images", download any or all of the zipped files (they all crash krita), "inflate", open krita, open one of the images, krita crashes. I have used Bruce Lindbloom's references images in other applications. The tif files are good. > opening 8-bit tif from bruce lindbloom: > > no debugging symbols found) > Using host libthread_db library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1". > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > [Thread debugging using libthread_db enabled] > [New Thread 47294582407312 (LWP 6634)] > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > (no debugging symbols found) > [KCrash handler] > #5 0x00002b039a647ac0 in memcpy () from /lib/libc.so.6 > #6 0x00002aaab4dbbc20 in ?? I just installed digikam along with a bunch of other kde stuff. I created an album and put the four tifs from bruce lindbloom's site in the album, along with all the other tifs that krita can't open (crashes). Digikam opened all the tifs without any problem at all. I then right-clicked to edit one of the bruce lindbloom tifs (see link in previous email quoted below) with krita. Krita crashed. As I said in my email to Cyrille (I sent him a copy of one of my tifs), when opening a tif, while running krita by typing "gdb krita" at the command line, krita hangs rather than crashes. drkonqi never shows up. So I installed kde-core and reinstalled krita. This is the result of attempting to open several different tiffs: The first tif, the "8-bit tif from bruce lindbloom", can be found on the internet here: <a class="moz-txt-link-freetext" href="http://www.brucelindbloom.com/">http://www.brucelindbloom.com/</a>? click on "Info", then choose "RGB Reference Images", download any or all of the zipped files (they all crash krita), "inflate", open krita, open one of the images, krita crashes. I have used Bruce Lindbloom's references images in other applications. The tif files are good. </pre> <blockquote type="cite"> <pre wrap="">opening 8-bit tif from bruce lindbloom: no debugging symbols found) Using host libthread_db library "/lib/libthread_db.so.1". I can't reproduce :( I did successfully opened the file you have send me. The worse kind of bug :( But it seems that Krita is trying to read a color profile on the image while there is definitively no color profile in the image. So I was wondering if we were using the same version of libtiff, I have 3.8.2-7ubuntu2, what's yours ? (you can check with dpkg -l | grep tiff) I also thought that it could be that you are using a 64bit processor, but I tried on both 32bits and 64bits without a problem.
Cyrille, I have the same version of libtiff as you. Do you have access to an amd opteron system, or any other amd system? Somewhere I encountered another person saying that krita had trouble opening tifs with amd processor computers. I even went so far as to install kde-core and try again, same problem. And I downloaded some tifs from the internet. No go. I installed digikam. It could display all the tiffs I threw at it. But when I used digikam to send a tiff to krita, krita crashed on opening and took digikam along with it. I posted a thread on the ubuntu forums asking if anyone else has a similar problem (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=669702&highlight=krita). If you go here, http://jcornuz.wordpress.com/2007/10/08/krita-the-kontender/#more-29, you will see another person has trouble with krita and tifs. If there is any other information or test you would like me to run, I will do so. If this were windows, I'd be running dependency walker to see exactly when/where krita falls apart. But alas, I don't know enough about linux (having just switched over) to know where/how to start tracking down bugs. If there is no color profile attached to an image, shouldn't krita default to srgb? Or better yet ask which profile to assign? Or give the user a chance to decide a default course of action? A color-managed workflow kinda heavily depends on being able to keep track of color profiles. Anyway, thanks so much for trying to replicate krita crashing. If there is anything else you'd like me to check/send/try, advise and I will do my best to comply. Elle Cyrille Berger wrote: [bugs.kde.org quoted mail]
Well I have tested on an Intel Dual Core in 32bits with kubuntu, on an AMD Dual Core 64bits with OpenSuSE, and I asked someone with an AMD Athlon 64bits with Debian. And none crashes. I am going to install a virtual image of kubuntu 64bits and see if I have the crash. As for the "no profile" in the tiff, Krita should of course ask the user, but here the problem is that even if there is no profile, Krita seems to try to read one, and of course it completely fails.
I can confirm that it crashes on Kubuntu 64bits, but considering that it is the only distribution which has the problem, I do think that it should be reported to kubuntu on launchpad.net .
Fwiw, my linux distribution is 64-bit "Ubuntu" but not gnome Ubuntu. I did a minimal command-line net-install and set up an icewm "desktop". Even though I've added a lot of software, I don't have anything like a normal "user-friendly" desktop - no dbus or hal or avahi (or, or, or . . .) running in the background, for example. And I don't have kubuntu installed, either. As an experiment, I recently installed a whole lot of kde stuff (base, core and a little more - since uninstalled) and then reinstalled krita, just in case krita was crashing because it missed its kde environment. But krita still crashed as soon as I tried to open a tif. Cyrille Berger wrote: [bugs.kde.org quoted mail]
I am fully aware of this, but since the problem only happen on 64bits Ubuntu-derivative, I am guessing they are doing something wrong, and they are the people who know better than anyone else what they can have change that can be wrong.
