FTP UPLOAD FOR BACKUP AND VERSIONING PURPOSES:

For project work related optimization.
Automatic/manually triggered uploads of xmi files at specific interval to a user defined FTP area, from a user defined directory/workspace.

Here we are talking about a timer controlled procedure where the user can set the interval between transfers or manually uploading triggered from a button/menu within the umbrello working UI.

An integration of this type of save into other software project versioning tools would also be a resonable idea.

umbrello has build in upload feature to remote locations through the kio frameworks since ages.

You may save a xmi file to a ftp resource by specifing a ftp url as target location. Automatic update could be enabled with umbrello "auto save" settings.
