Version:           0.10.15 (using KDE KDE 3.5.7)
Installed from:    Gentoo Packages
Compiler:          gcc-4.1.2 
OS:                Linux

This bug only occurs on PPC (your bug tracking system doesn't have a arch. flag?):

The bug is still there on KNode/0.10.15, KDE 3.5.7: 
 <5872298.213DNC1iMv@burcheri.albasani.net> 
I tried all charsets and sent a message with special characters. But the result is always us-ascii, 7Bit.
