Sorry, it is a WISH, not a bug. I didn't notice what is going on while reading this mail (upper one). So the wish -- please adjust shortening on mail status change (read, unread, new, important, etc). It works both ways, for example read->unread make subject too long currently.
Never have seen something like this. Do you still have this with a recent kmail version?
I didn't migrate to KDE4 so I cannot tell. It happens only after you fetched some new mail (for the fetched mail, not the older ones).
