Description Stéphane Magnenat 2007-06-26 14:57:35 UTC
Version: 0.2 (using KDE 3.5.7, Kubuntu (feisty) 4:3.5.7-0ubuntu1~feisty2)
Compiler:          Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.20-16-generic

It would be nice to have color management support (both calibration and profile loading) inside display setting applet.
Existing applications of some interest are:
* xicc
* lprof

More generally, now that both krita and scribus provide color management support, it would be nice that KDE as a whole ease the life of the user that want to get proper colors.

Thanks, have a nice day,

This functionality is in SVN in the kolor-manager module for System Setting in KDE4. Kolor-manager (and it's dependencies) supports not only monitor LUT loading but also setting of the X11 _ICC_PROFILE atoms. This work was done during the Google Summer of Code 2008 by a student working with OpenICC. In addition GSoC 2009 work on it, again sponsored by OpenICC, is in the process of adding color management support for CUPS, sane and libraw. There are two separate GSoC student projects doing this work.

You can get kolor-manager from

svn co svn://anonsvn.kde.org/home/kde/trunk/playground/graphics/kolor-manager

Right at this time it is under heavy development and might be a little difficult to get everything working (IE getting all of the pieces in the right state for things to actually work). In order to install it you will also need oyranons git, xcalib and elektra and possibly some other stuff that will be aggregated into either kolor-manager or oyranos when GSoC 2009 is finished. Kolor-manager is KDE 4.x only and current development is happening on a KDE 4.2.x machine. When this settles down in a few weeks it should be useful to users wishing to setup their display systems to properly support monitor calibration. The monitor stuff is actually fairly mature at this point and as of the end of the 2008 project was very usable and user friendly.

The cups, sane and libraw support is more along the lines of putting in place the support layers that will prove to be useful as color management matures in these other systems. Kolor-manager + Oyranos + xcalib + lcms can be thought of as being analogous to the ColorSync system on OS/X.

I also agree that changes need to take place in the System Settings -> Display module to coordinate how video card gamma tables are handled on color management aware systems. See bug #150283 for more details.

Kolor Manager is now part of KDE extragear, allowing to set XCC profiles for display and printers. KWin will also allow GL assisted color correction in KDE 4.10. For more information, see https://git.reviewboard.kde.org/r/106141/
