Version: 2.6.1 (using KDE KDE 3.5.7) Installed from: Gentoo Packages Compiler: gcc (GCC) 4.1.2 (Gentoo 4.1.2) OS: Linux When I use kde 3.5.7 in my laptop with the multimediakeys configured with xmodmap, it's only able to change the sound level of the headphones, although I indicate it to change PCM, Internal Speaker or any other. Now, I have returned to kde 3.5.5 and it works well.
I have a couple of questions: 1) Are only the multimedia keys affected? 2a) Is the shortcut for the Master affected? (Menu -> Settings -> Global Shortcuts) 2b) Is the shortcut for normal controls (e.g. PCM) affected? (KMix main menu -> PCM slider -> right click -> Global Shortcuts) 3) Is Kmilo running? (kcontrol -> KDE components -> Services -> Lower list "KDE sevices at start" -> KMilo if it is running: a) Stop it b) Disable it c) Logout from KDE d) Login again e) Try it and report back
Well, I have done what you have asked me, except 2a question, because I haven't understood it at all, but I can tell you that this problem only affects multimedia keys (I can change the values of any channel manually (PCM, Internal Speaker..., etc)) The values for global shortcuts are all empty (but I haven't changed the configuration and if using kde 3.5.5 all works well) and Kmilo was running, and if I do what you have said me, after login again, when pressing any multimedia key it doesn't detect it. Remember that when pressing a multimedia key with Kmilo enabled and running, kmix is able to change only headphones sound level although I have selected another master channel.

Joel, could you please open an Konsole and call: egrep -4 -i Dev.*key ~/.kde/share/config/kmix*rc This will show all assigned keys in KMix and the KMix Panelapplet. ---------- If there are keys assigned, starting with a clean configuration might help: 0) Stop Kmilo as described in comment 1 1) Stop KMix (KMix Mainwindow -> CTRL-q) 2) Stop KMix Panelapplet (Context menu on left panel applet border -> Remove mixer applet) 3) Move away old configuration: (Open Konsole -> "mv ~/.kde/share/config/kmix*rc ~" ) 4) Start KMix again 5) Assign global keyboard shortcuts 6) Please report back here
Christian, that instruction doesn't show me any output.
Very strange. Probably some other application is taking away the global shortcut. All that is left that you still try the second part from comment 4. Otherwise we are stuck here.
By the way. other programs that take away the global shortcut are usually multimedia applications, like mixers, audio players (amarok, xmms, ...), video players (xine, mplayer, kaffeine, ...). You should check if any multimedia app is running and quit it.
Due to the hint "I have returned to kde 3.5.5 and it works well" I have found out what went wrong. It is a KMilo issue. *** This bug has been marked as a duplicate of 149487 ***
