(*** This bug was imported into bugs.kde.org ***) I am not able to get kaffe to work with konqueror. Installed kaffe with yast on my suse6.4 system (Kaffe details: Just-in-time v3 Version: 1.0.5 Java Version: 1.1 ) and filled in "/usr/lib/kaffe/bin/kaffe" in the "Path to jdk "setting under the browser settings. Could anyone tell me (and maybe add to the FAQ for others) how to get kaffe to work with konqueror?
Hello Kaffe won't be supported by KJAS. KJAS uses some classes only available in Java 2 compatible JRE's. As far I know kaffe isn't that far yet. If someone else wants to implement a Java 1.1 compatible version of KJAS more power to them- I don't have the time/desire to do so though. Blackdown 1.3 works very well and is freely available too. I am reopening the request as wish for two reasons: * Kaffe has improved a lot and might offer the necessary classes. At least I could start it as java without security manager and it showed me a lot with -verbose. E.g. java -fullversion on Debian Sarge gives me: Kaffe Virtual Machine Engine: Interpreter Version: 1.1.5 Java Version: 1.1 * Backdown and Sun's Java efforts are not Free Software. While some users are not appalled by this, some distributors are.
As for free software stuff, I think someone had some success with using the gcj/gij suite, but I don't know whether it was just for compilation...
It would be nice if the status of gcj/gij would be documented somewhere. (Adding a new bug issue for it?) I would focus this wish towards kaffe, which would be cool to have as an alternative even when gcj/gij works.
Testing with Mandriva 2006.0 (having KDE 3.4.2) and kaffe-1.1.7-0.rc1.3mdk I had some success. I could start and run the games.yahoo.com go applet. It worked when I disabled the use of the Security manager and added a "-v" to the Java options, enabled debuggging and started konqueror from the command line. (I had to add the "-v" several times as konqueror forgot about the setting after one use.) Also I had to give the full path to kaffe. Yngve, can you try this? Anything you can try, you should be able to at least give the output of the debugging konqueror produces on the command line. If you are that far I think we only need to add this to an FAQ somewhere.
is this still valid for konq 4.3?
It is more than one year and half the kaffe project is not updated... probably this is no more valid. Really I've never seen nobody using it.
I suggest to test it. At least I am still interested in getting good java support for Konqueror that includes different JVMs. Curently I am unable to do the test with Konqueror 4.3 mainly because Debian stable does not have KDE 4.
As the kaffe initative is unmaintained, this request can be considered timed out. == Details As of today http://www.kaffe.org/ points to https://github.com/kaffe/kaffe with the last commit in August 2011.
