Description Jörg Walter 2007-03-21 10:33:13 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

I'd love to see some enhancements made to the selection tool, since this is about the last point that keeps me from ditching gimp for my daily work:

 1) Showing the current size in the status bar while dragging a rubber band rectangle/ellipse/whatever would be a great help in getting the selection right in the first try.
 2) I'm also missing a selection mode "replace" that behaves like more or less like selections in all other programs: it removes the old selection and starts a new one.
 3) It would then be nice to have "empty selection" equal "no selection" (currently, the whole image is tinted if you drag an empty selection), which leads to the shortcut "click somewhere to unselect all" as known from about any other program.
 4) I'm not sure if it is a bug or a feature, but if I copy a selection of exactly 1px x <any size> (or <any size> x 1px), then use "Edit/Paste into new Image", the new image has 64px instead of 1px in that dimension. Is there a good reason for this behaviour?
 5) Well, and now a killer feature only just being introduced in gimp (2.3 development series): Resizing rectangular selections. This is plain great, dragging borders to resize a rectangular (or elliptical) selection saved me so many hassles I usually have when missing the desired selection by a few pixels. Look at gimp how they did it, they simply use the bounding rectangle and show scaling "handles" when near one of the borders. Fun and easy to use (although I am aware that this is probably hard to do in krita right now)

Well, and then there are marching ants, but I already saw that wishlist item and the response... ;)

Thanks for your valuable feedback.

1) Agreed. That should be added once the new statusbar it ready.

2) "Replace" will be added soon.

3) There recently was a dicussion about this on the mailinglist. This is work in progress.

4) Good question. No idea if that behavior is intended.

5) I'm working on something like this of the Summer of Code.

Marching ants is already done ;)

I think 2-5 are fixed now. For point 1 it probably needs to be discussed how that should can be handled Koffice wide.

I think we're okay now with what we have. To extend our status bar further, we'd need a new proposal.
