I prefer fixed, custom ordered, contact/buddy positions in the contact-list, which don´t jump around depending on their online/offline state. 
Trillian works this way: Drag the contacts in the order you like and the illuminated icon shows if their online. The contacts can be found much quicker.  
Using groups is no good alternative because the contacts although can´t be ordered other than alphabetical. Beside that: the group-header waste lots of space.

Fixed in trunk (SVN commit 946606) will be in KDE 4.3
