Description Dalibor Karlović 2007-02-20 10:42:17 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.6)
Installed from: Fedora RPMs
OS: Linux

The problem with the KDE menu (at least in Fedora Core 6) is it's just overcrowded, it would take atleast an hour to clean up. I propose this:

- you should be able to enable/disable display of items in the menu without deleting them (like in Gnome menu editor), menu items and complete submenus (let's say you remove some menu and two weeks later, you need it again, you have to recreate it, find it's icon etc., that's suboptimal)

- you should be able to set a default behaviour for adding new menu items when new packages are installed. For example, lets say you've setup your menu just to your liking and you don't need anything else, but installing some packages adds some new menu items which you don't want. If the menu editor had a preference "Disable new items by default", you could add new stuff as it comes along (some notofication system?)

- KDE menu editor menubar should contain "Configure KDE menu" that should call the menu preference from Control Center, the settings for the application aren't that important for the user

- you should be able to create aliases, for example I create a new alias Math which point to Matchematics and disable display of latter, but all it's items display in Math so if a new package adds something in Mathematics, it works as expected.

One report = one issue, please!

1) duplicate: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=107404

2) it seems awkward

3) duplicate: http://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=162467

4) why not change the label then?

I forgot I ever filed this. :)

1, 3) OK
2) It could be set per submenu level, why do you find it awkward?
4) new packages would recreate the old group?

2) maybe I explain -- I agree with you there is an issue it would be useful to have solved, but I don't like the way to do it, because once implemented I really doubt it will be productive, if you switch this on you will never find out what you are really missing, I would rather opt for incorporating this and the idea of two sets of menu to set "tag new entries as invisible" or "do not copy new entries from default set". So I rather say, let's wait till (1) will be fixed

4) new entries should never recreate the group, if it happens now it is more like a bug (or shortcoming). Assuming there is no recreation of the group, only adding/removing to/from group it would solve this as well:
Group: Mathematics
Label (for displaying in Kmenu): Math
I think it is much more straightforward (for developers too), less complex and more intuitive.
