Description Jacek Furmankiewicz 2007-02-19 22:05:47 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages
Compiler: Intel i686
OS: Linux

I am using KAudioCDCreator to rip my entire collection of hundreds of CDs to MP3 using LAME. I have two drives in the PC, so I usually rip 2 CDs at one time with two separate instances of KAudioCreator.

Since I am using KAudioCDCreator in such a repetitive fashion, a few usability issues come up over and over again.

a) the separate Tracks and Jobs tabs should be shown together in one screen (there is plenty of screen real estate with today's monitors, why have them in two separate tabs and force the user to click to the Jobs tabs to see if the rip/encoding has finished)

b) show the album properties on the same screen, so that they can be easily edited. Unfortunately, many albums have incomplete tag information (e.g. year is missing or genre is invalid, causing LAME to fail), so it would be great if I could just change the album (or track) info right there in the same screen without having to open a popup window

c) add an option to preferences to automatically close KAudioCDCreator after a successful rip/encode. That way I would not have to check the Jobs tab to see if it was successful...if KAudioCDCreator was closed that means the rip was successful.

d) change the title of the window to reflect the current album and maybe even the process completed % of the current jobs (instead of me seeing just KAudioCDCreator and KAudioCDCreator <2>, it would be great to see "KAudioCDCreator - Metallica - Black Album - 59%" and "KAudioCDCreator - Krzysztof Penderecki - Matrix 5" in the KDE panel).

e) would it be possible to enhance the LAME integration so that even if the Year or Genre is missing/invalid the encoding would not fail? I've never had an encoding fail with other rippers (at least on Windows), regardless of the CDDB information and how valid it was.

Attached please find a simple mockup I did in Java of what the new KAudioCDCreator UI might look like to make it more productive and easier to use...hope it may be useful.

This would really help when I am ripping 300 CDs or so...

Sorry for the "wrong" bug title, this is my first KDE bug/enhancement request...I should change it to "New UI suggestion" or something like that....

Thank you for the bug report.

As this report hasn't seen any changes in 5 years or more, we ask if you can please confirm that the issue still persists.

If this bug is no longer persisting or relevant please change the status to resolved.

This project is unfortunately no longer maintained.

If a new maintainer wants to step up and take care, the project is archived here:

https://invent.kde.org/unmaintained/kaudiocreator

You can just clone it in your private namespace on invent.kde.org and if you have started to work on it and fixed/implemented something get it reviewed and the project unarchived.

Sorry for the inconveniences.
