Description mickljosapth 2007-01-16 17:54:45 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages

Hello,

I would like to ask for a feature in ark. To be implemented to span floppy disks, cdr, cdrw dvd disks. A frontend to: Cat / Split. So it would not be so tedious to always do it on command line. Such as .01 .02 .03. parts. Optionally for a user to select custom split sizes. Later to be able to merge the splits with ark.

Personal Opinion / Rant :

Why must it be backing up data in linux needs a computer Science degree? Sorry, do not mean to come off unprofessionally. What work you do is very good Thanks guys/ gals. Can't demand on work done by people at spare time. With acknowledging that like to add my dark points on backup.

This is still not acceptable that in year 2007. Say new "older linux users" may not want to mess around with "Split / Cat ". In windows their are tons
of archivers that do span disking at gui level. In linux their is a nice program. It is called kdar but the format it uses is ".dar" rather then ".tar". Ark is part of the kde desktop. It should make working with cat / split easier. Since kde is a friendly desktop aimed at making things a little easier.

Scenario:

Should a linux crash say: "oops backup was too hard to do. I did not backup, or I did backup but it is messed up. Because disk 752 what issued with wrong command". Not everyone uses tapes these days. Please understand my vent here is not aimed at discrediting the good work. It is made to bring some serious attention to a vital part of daily lives. Backing up is very important can't stress that enough. Therefore it should be made as pleasantly as possible.

Currently projects that at least trying to do it right:

Peazip (gnome)
kdar (kde but nonstandard format)

Thanks,
