I had imap checking my inbox for 1 1/2 hours without it timing out. After I closed Kontact it took some time but the kio_imap4 vanished.

Expected behaviour: have a reasonable time out, no matter which action fails.

Had that problem earlier, but not in recent kmail versions anymore. Please report back if you still experience this issue in KDE 4.3+
