Description Pascal d'Hermilly 2007-01-10 01:53:48 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

It would be nice to be able to select several emails in a folder with the mouse.

example: with a tool like the "rectangle select" in krita or gimp.

It's irritating always to have to use the keyboard as well while selecting.

Best

Comment 1 Marc Collin 2007-01-10 02:20:24 UTC
i agree, this is a basic feature...
Comment 2 Philip Rodrigues 2007-01-11 21:39:49 UTC
I don't think you can do this without breaking drag n drop. Do other mail clients provide this feature?
Comment 3 Pascal d'Hermilly 2007-01-12 01:18:22 UTC
Take a look at how it's done in konqueror with a file list.
Drag'n drop is only when the text area or the icon is selected.
Comment 4 Bram Schoenmakers 2007-01-22 16:29:04 UTC
The difference between Konqueror and KMail is that the texts in Konqueror are generally much shorter than the subjects in KMail. So there is plenty of space to start a drag in whitespace, it's much more difficult in KMail.
Comment 5 Philip Rodrigues 2007-01-22 22:09:15 UTC
I should note that the konqueror feature referred to isn't without its own problems too - take a look at the bug reports in product konqueror, component file list view.
Comment 6 Tristan Miller 2007-03-10 20:36:05 UTC
I strongly oppose implementing selection rectangles. There's no obvious whitespace in the message pane which users expect to use as starting points for dragging a selection rectangle. Using the whitespace after short message subjects is counterintuitive, since users expect that dragging there will activate drag-and-drop.

However, one solution might be to implement an optional extra selection column, such as those found in spreadsheets. Dragging on those selects multiple rows.

To Tristan:
I entirely disagree. This approach works perfectly for me in konqueror where you can select in the wished way. I might not be very handy if you use 800x600 resolution and have to cram all your email headers together. But that shouldn't stop the people who are using 1600x1200.
Also this will not be counterintuitive as this is the way it works in konqueror.

The spreadsheet idea with the extra column is just another way of making space. I'm sure it would work fine for the smaller resolutions but it would be unnecessary if not annoying for everybody else.
Comment 9 Bram Schoenmakers 2007-03-17 12:38:22 UTC
Even with my 1400x1050 resolution, selecting like this will not work, simply because there's no space to initiate a drag. What's wrong with the good ol' Shift?

So Pascal, I wonder how you want to solve this for the unlucky people who live with a display size smaller than 1600x1200 (which is quite a bunch).

example 1280x800

This is an example of how it would work on a 1280x800 kubuntu standard setup.
IMHO this is a basic feature, and does not conflict with drag and drop in other
way than if try to drag a mail and the mouse is not over a piece of text you
will get the select tool instead, which is actually pretty logical as this is
the way it functions in konqueror too.

Look at the example and tell me if you still think it's a bad idea. To me, it's
really just about options, like the rest of KDE.

bram, tristan, phillip
look at the above screenshot and tell me what you think. If you still think it's a lousy feature I'll close the wish.

In kde 4?
Comment 13 Myriam Schweingruber 2012-08-18 08:33:41 UTC
Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 14 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-19 00:29:17 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
Comment 15 Pascal d'Hermilly 2012-08-20 08:15:54 UTC
This wishlist item is still valid for kmail2
Comment 16 Pascal d'Hermilly 2013-11-26 13:25:30 UTC
Look at how well this works in dolphin.
If it is still considered a bad idea, then please close it.
