Description Leon Maurer 2006-11-08 15:45:50 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

I have a box running Kubuntu 6.10 at home and a mac running OS X 10.4.8 at work, and they both access the same IMAP account. If I leave kmail running when I'm at work and I get new mail in the IMAP account, mail reports that I have a ridiculous number of unread messages -- if two messages arrive it might say there are 10, and this number goes up with time (often to a few hundred over the course of the day), and the count increases even if no new messages arrive. However, when I actually look in the folder, mail will finally display the correct number of new messages. However, if I mark them as read, they only stay that way for a little while before they go back to being marked as unread and the message count goes through the roof again. Also, when first accessing the account with mail, often several copies of the same message are shown (although only a few, not a few hundred), but then they disappear when mail figures out the correct message count. Kmail shows none of these problems, they appear only in mail.

There is a second IMAP account that both kmail and mail access, and it has not had this problem, but I've had almost no email arrive there -- I can test it if needed.

This may be a mail problem rather than a kmail problem, but I doubt it -- I've used thunderbird and mail at the same time and never had this kind of problem. I just switched to a disconnected imap account on kmail, and the problem has disappeared, but I would like the option of using a regular IMAP account without this problem.

Is this still an issue with a recent version of kmail?

That exact problem no longer occurs, although there are still problems when kmail and another mail client are both accessing the same IMAP account. Specifically, every message not read in kmail appears twice, and reading one or both copies in the other mail client will not cause the message to be marked as read in kmail. Once the message is read in kmail, the second copy disappears and the message is correctly marked as read.

That's another bug that is already reported in bugzilla, I'm sure. Can you look for it yourself?
