Description Luca Tornelli 2006-10-11 17:45:16 UTC
Version: 3.5.5 (using KDE 3.5.5, Kubuntu (dapper) 4:3.5.5-0ubuntu1)
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.15-27-386

When KMenu is configured to display Name (Description) entries are displayed as Name Description, without parenthesis.

Comment 1 Aaron J. Seigo 2006-10-11 18:57:54 UTC
this is intentional.

is the problem simply the visual effect of missing ()s or is it a grammar issue for your language?

i didn't change the string in the config dialog to avoid annoying translators.
Comment 2 Luca Tornelli 2006-10-12 12:37:31 UTC
i don't know if it's an issue for my language, but in KDE 3.5.4 the parenthesis were present.
Comment 3 Luca Tornelli 2006-10-20 15:05:14 UTC
The problem is that in English is ok, but in some languages is difficult to understand the entry without parenthesis and is a little bit "ugly" to read.
But if this is intentional i will complain with translators :)

Even in English, it does not look good, specially if the Description is quite long. For example, then entry for Kontact will be "Kontact Personal Information Manager". Also, when K Menu is configured to display "Description (Name)", the parenthesis do appear.
Comment 6 Eduard Ereza Martínez 2006-11-06 09:48:36 UTC
It IS a grammar issue in my language, Catalan, and I suppose also is in other languages like Spanish or French, which are similar.
Maybe it could be left as another option, (maybe "Name Description"), but the parentheses option should be there. It is REALLY ugly in some languages.
I already had submitted this as a bug in Ubuntu Bug Tracker: https://launchpad.net/distros/ubuntu/+source/kdebase/+bug/67113

In my opinion, this bug should be REOPENED. It has been reported two more times: in bug #137164 and bug #137446. Also, the "WORKS FOR ME" resolution is only applicable to English and some other languages, but a lot of languages (I assume the Latin ones, like Spanish, Italian, French or Catalan) are affected by this bug, as I already commented.
Comment 9 Luca Tornelli 2006-11-17 19:07:22 UTC
I will reopen this bug because it has been reported from different people, and the entry received some votes. I've closed it because Seigo told me that this behaviour is intentional, even if it looks very ugly in languages other than english. If it's not considered a bug from the developers and it's not the right place to report problems like this i will close the report again, but in my opinion this is a bug, because makes menu entries very difficult to read and understand, at least in latin languages.

I don't even understand how this could even be confused as intentional regardless of language. The option in KDE flat out says Name (Description) - showing the parens - as does the Description (Name) option. One shows the parens in the Kmenu, one does not. If it was intentional, wouldn't the parens be either missing or showing for both options? Instead one works as shown, one does not.

The bug is in /kicker/kicker/ui/service_mnu.cpp. A fix can be obtained at http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-commit/2006-11/msg00492.html ("restore parens for NameAndDescription format in Kicker (#213450)").
Comment 13 Tanja Schulte 2007-02-04 15:31:34 UTC
The description is (just) an additional explanation to what the pure name of the application cannot reveal. An explanation always should be separated from the pure name. Either by brackets, by comma, by slash, by line break (not in this case), by colon, by hyphen or whatsoever. It is better readable and better understandable.

BTW: What aobut Bug 137164? Shouldn't they go together now that this report is reopened?
Comment 14 Philippe Cloutier 2007-02-12 02:52:12 UTC
Yes.

>So as Bug 135465 has been reopened this one should be marked as duplicate.
Comment 15 Daniel Calviño Sánchez 2007-09-26 18:30:48 UTC
I have just tried KDE 3.5.7, and the bug is "fixed". It was "fixed" in revision 635743 (http://websvn.kde.org/?view=rev&revision=635743).

However, I don't see it to be really fixed. I mean, a separator was added, but I think the selected one, "-", isn't the best. From the changelog of the revision I understand that now each translation team can select which separation use between Name and Description. I think it is a good decision (although it can bring some headaches), but IMHO the default separator should be parenthesis.

If format is "Description (Name)", the parenthesis are still used by default. The default format "Name - Description" should be instead "Name (Description)", as it is more coherent with the other.

Also, I prefer parenthesis as they just show additional information (like an explanation). Although maybe in English such explanations are made using "-" instead of parenthesis, I don't know.

Kicker is currently unmaintained, you can look to your distribution for help, however.
