Version:           4.5.5 (using KDE KDE 3.5.5)
Installed from:    Unlisted Binary Package
Compiler:          gcc 4.1.1 
OS:                Linux

After firering up kate I do as follows :

- start new session
- enter 10 newlines
- goto line 5
- type 'a'
- kate crashes

Cannot reproduce. Could you provide us a detailed backtrace of the crash? Backtraces are most useful if you have chosen for debug symbols at compile time (./configure --enable-debug=full).
