Description Frosch 2006-08-13 15:51:22 UTC
Version: 1.6 (using KDE 3.5.4, Debian Package 4:3.5.4-3 (testing/unstable))
Compiler: Target: i486-linux-gnu
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.17

I think, in the most recent KDE version (that is 3.5.4), kscd is totally broken. Either it plays the CD too fast, in fact it's more like: play one second too fast - skip a little - play next second too fast - skip a little - play next second too fast - skip a little - ... Or, kscd cannot play the CD at all. The error message in this case is that it cannot access the CD, but when starting from the command line I get this message:

open failed: Device or ressource is busy
cdda: setup_soundsystem failed

Well, the device is NOT busy. I can play the CD with any other player like xine, mplayer or gnome-cd in normal speed without any skipping. Btw., I use ALSA with dmixer and dsnoop enabled. I set my sound device to ALSA in kscd and also the path to my CD drive is correct.

As I'm not listening to CDs that often, I have no idea when kscd stopped working for me. I used it some time ago and back then it indeed was working. I'm wondering if it is maybe unmaintained and did not follow any new kio changes introduced in recent versions of KDE?

Anyway, i think in this condition it should and must not be shipped with KDE anymore. I tried it out on two different computers (laptops) and the described behavior is the same in both cases.
