Description Mathias Homann 2006-08-08 23:04:48 UTC
Version: 1.9.4 (using KDE 3.5.4 Level "a" , unofficial build of SUSE )
Compiler: Target: i586-suse-linux
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.13-15.11-default

i think the "move message to folder" dialog is a little bit too crowded now, on the left it has all folders kmail knows as a collapsable tree, and on the right it has the same information in a unix path style, which is redundant.
the dialog is just too full of text now.

It also seems a bit crowded to me.

The Path column helps a bit if you are using different resources (like have folders locally and on an IMAP server).

I'm not a usability expert so I really don't know if we should remove the Path column, or do something else to make things less crowded.

This dialog is used in several places throughout KMail (eg. you can select a folder when "Finding Messages".

configurable would be good, so that you can disable the second column if you don't want/need/like it.
Comment 3 Ingo Klöcker 2006-08-09 09:23:49 UTC
I said exactly the same, but the other developers overruled me. The second column helps if you use the new feature that was introduced together with the changed GUI. If you type in a few characters then only those folders (and their parents) containing those characters will be shown. So if you quickly want to move something to your spam folder you can simply type "spam" instead of having to use the navigation keys.

I'll downgrade this to a wish since it's not really a bug. I'll see if I find the time to make it configurable in KDE 3.5.5.

I don't see a reason for the path column, it just duplicates information already shown via the treeview.
What about adding a searchbar that every user understands right away and get rid of the second column? Typing a searchterm into braces inside a view-header is not very common.
Comment 5 Mathias Homann 2006-08-09 10:19:38 UTC
was this new feature mentioned anywhere?
I don't think so, and I even DO read the changelog when a new kde version is released... So how's joe j. doofus the stupid newbie supposed to find it?
Comment 6 Ingo Klöcker 2006-08-09 11:48:03 UTC
It was already mentioned in the changelog for KDE 3.5.3. I took it out of KDE 3.5.3 because there were a few things I wanted to be fixed before it's included.

I also had no idea that the list was "quick-searchable". I would expect to see a quick search dialog like we normally have. The point of this feature, however, is to very quickly copy/move a message. If you have to find the quick search bar, then click into it.... that increases the time. But, if we move focus directly into the quick search bar then we wouldn't have the extra move
and click.

Comment 8 Ingo Klöcker 2006-08-10 00:34:34 UTC
If the focus is in the quick search bar then you can't simply press return when the correct folder is already selected. So that's not a viable solution. A reasonable solution would be sending all characters that are received by the list view to the quick search so that one doesn't have to give focus to the quick search in order to enter the search term. Please note, that I'm a bit concerned about adding a quick search bar to this dialog. The dialog is supposed to be a very simple dialog. We shouldn't make it more complex than necessary. And yes, we should get rid of one of the two columns, but I'm not sure which one.

I'd prefer to keep the collapsable tree.
Comment 10 Björn Ruberg 2009-12-29 21:34:21 UTC
Sorry, where is this dialog in KDE 4.3? I cannot find it. Just the "move to" action, which uses quite clean menus for moving messages.
Comment 11 Mathias Homann 2009-12-29 21:50:42 UTC
select a message and press "m"
Comment 12 Myriam Schweingruber 2012-08-18 08:19:33 UTC
Thank you for your feature request. Kmail1 is currently unmaintained so we are closing all wishes. Please feel free to reopen a feature request for Kmail2 if it has not already been implemented.
Thank you for your understanding.
Comment 13 Luigi Toscano 2012-08-19 00:32:37 UTC
Instead of creating a new feature request, please confirm here if the wishlist is still valid for kmail2.
Comment 14 Mathias Homann 2012-08-19 05:47:27 UTC
nope, the "move to" dialog is fine in KMail 2
