Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.3) Installed from: Gentoo Packages Compiler: gcc (GCC) 3.4.6 (Gentoo 3.4.6-r1, ssp-3.4.5-1.0, pie-8.7.9) OS: Linux 1) I noticed this first using compiz but it happens also in normal X using kwin 2) kdesktop will change the background if I drag an image to it and click "set as background" (compiz or kwin) --- so this way does work 3) I can't change the background using the configure desktop/background module in kde, the preview works, but apply/ok button does not actually apply the background. I liked it when this feature did work, because I cycled through all of my backgrounds every few minutes. But now I have to set it manually using the above method. I have run revdep-rebuild on the system (gentoo) and it comes back with "dynamic linking is consistent" so I don't think this is an issue with packages I don't have installed or something... I'm not honestly sure what would be different about my system than any other, but I think the bug to this point hasn't been recognized by anyone but me. It could be a configuration problem (probably, I hope someone will know where I can find the option causing the issue), but either way it's something I don't remember changing and that no one on forums (gentoo forums, kde-forum.org) to this point has been able to help me with. Thanks!
Resolved, problem was with my configuration file for the background. It was somehow.. corrupted? I guess. Not sure how that happened and I never edited it manually so that's still kind of a bug but not the one reported here.
The exact fix is to do the following in your home dir: mv .kde/share/config/kdesktoprc .kde/share/config/OLD-kdesktoprc And then kill the X-server. I don't know if it is absolutely required but after the above command I went ahead and used <ctrl><alt><backspace> to kill X and make sure it didn't try to rewrite it, then on the next login I was able to set the background normally. This happened immediately after upgrading from 3.5.3 to 3.5.4 so that may have had something to do with it. I hope this helps someone.
Right, that's pretty much what I did, and I think it may have happened to me when upgrading as well (though it was 3.5.2 to 3.5.3, I fixed it before I upgraded to 3.5.4 and it didn't show up again).
Just one more thing on this since it seems to be a favorite of mine :^) Apparently if you rename, move or remove the folder in which your current background is in it can trigger this bug. Same fix. I'm assuming that when I upgraded it also happened to change the location of my background and that's what caused it. Perhaps should be opened as this is something that could easily affect an end user who's doing some housecleaning in their home directory and the fix isn't very obvious.
I've been working with someone on IRC about this bug and what we have in common is xinerama. Does every/anyone else who experienced this have (or has had in the past) xinerama enabled?

I don't believe I was using xinerama at the time, it did seem to result from a fairly recent kde upgrade. I did have xinerama support built into kdes it was in my make.conf (I use gentoo), but I didn't have a 2 monitor setup at the time to make use of it. At least, I think that is correct, it's possible I am wrong because I had been using 2 monitors for awhile until I bought a bigger flat panel display this year. illogic-al wrote: [bugs.kde.org quoted mail]
