Description Andrew 2006-06-11 01:40:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.1)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
OS: Linux

After opening my inbox in my local imap cache in kontakt, if I delete any message and then check my exchange inbox using MS Outlook, the email is still there, even an hour later. If after deleting the local imap message I changed to another local imap folder, and then access the exchange inbox using Outlook, the email is gone as expected.

I forgot to ask: are you using online or disconnected IMAP?
Comment 2 Andrew 2006-06-18 22:58:24 UTC
Online.
Comment 3 Carsten Burghardt 2006-06-19 09:27:15 UTC
KMail marks messages as deleted - that's how imap works. If exchange
displays deleted emails then I can't help. When you select a different
folder it is expunged and as a result the marked messages are deleted.
Comment 4 Andrew 2006-06-19 13:13:45 UTC
I have all my local folders (trash bin, drafts, sent items) changed to use the IMAP folders on the exchange server. So if I delete a message from my Exchange inbox using Kontact's IMAP, it will appear in my "local" IMAP trash bin, but not the one on the server. Let's say I forget to click another folder first...and restart Kontakt...it means the deleted message will always be on the server, it just won't be in the local inbox anymore...instead, it'll be in the local IMAP trash bin. I don't believe it should work like that. If that is how it works...then Kontact should have an option such as "sync immediately (or after a certain amount of time) with the IMAP server."
Comment 5 Carsten Burghardt 2006-06-20 14:59:34 UTC
If you use a trash folder on the imap server then the deleted email is copied there and not to your your local disk.
The folders are also expunged when you quit kmail/kontact so you don't have to click on a different folder.
Comment 6 Andrew 2006-06-20 19:39:24 UTC
By default, it goes to your local disk but as I mentioned...I changed it so that it goes to the server. The point you keep missing or don't understand is that although I'll be looking at my inbox on my server from kontakt, if I delete a message then it goes to my trash bin on my imap server. However, if I now use Outlook on my other box and look at the server's trash bin (deleted items) the message is not there. Instead, it's still sitting in the folder I deleted it from. So the changes are not propagated to the server, *UNLESS*, I first click on another folder in Kontakt, like drafts or just simply back and forth between the trash folder and the one it was deleted from (inbox). Then, I'll do the same in Outlook and there it is...finally deleted.

Let me know if you need further clarification.
Comment 7 Thiago Macieira 2006-06-22 09:55:52 UTC
And that's intentional. The message is only marked as deleted. It is not removed until you change folders or quit Kontact.
Comment 8 Ingo Klöcker 2006-06-22 14:59:11 UTC
I wonder whether it's also intentional that the "deleted" messages doesn't immediately appear in the trash folder. Carsten will have to tell us whether that's probably the server who delays the move of the message or whether it's something KMail is responsible for.

What's the status of this bug?
Comment 10 Bernd Oliver Sünderhauf 2012-11-25 04:14:06 UTC
Still valid for kmail2 in KDE 4.9.3 on Chakra.
Please move to kmail2 queue, component "general".
Comment 11 Allen Winter 2012-12-01 18:03:14 UTC
moving to kmail2
Comment 12 Denis Kurz 2016-09-24 17:58:20 UTC
This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of kmail2 (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.12 or later), it gets closed in about three months.
Comment 13 Denis Kurz 2017-01-07 22:20:53 UTC
Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
