Just in case you were not already aware of it Inkscape integrates potrace to trace bitmaps
What we really need is a lib potrace. If potrace was available as a library Karbon would be able to provide a much higher quality experience. Oh wait nevermind, here it is: http://potrace.sourceforge.net/potracelib.pdf Inkscape crudely wraps the command line utility and gets on with business but that approach leaves it unable to provide progress feedback. Tracing a bitmap can take a long time so this is a big issue. It is also worth noting that Inkscape integrates SIOX a foreground extraction tool to get better results, and Krita features such a SIOX based tool.
Autotrace is another option worth considering http://autotrace.sourceforge.net/

Hope this feature for the Calligra release. Is anybody working on this? It will go to 5 years and this is a must-have feature for a vector editing app.

To this day, Karbon doesn't have any bitmap tracing auxiliar/dock/option/whatever. Hope it can have that.
