Version: 2.6 (using KDE KDE 3.5.2) Installed from: Ubuntu Packages Past 80% or so, my soundcard starts to introduce clipping/distortion into the sound coming out of the speakers. Therefore, I have to keep the KMix's volume below 80% at all times. Sometimes when changing the volume down and up again, I pass the 80% mark and the sounds starts to distort. My wish is: Can there be a feature in the Configure KMix dialog that allows a maximum volume to be set? The sound levels would then never surpass this maximum volume and keep from distorting. Thanks, Andrew Ash
You are wishing a rudimentary, manual audio limiter. I upgrade your wish to: Clipping detection with selectable actions: -system tray icon flashing while clipping, and logged time of last occurrence -limiter to control the volume knob, with adjustable attack and optional release -soft clipping (gain compression) It could also be possible to: Detect recurring wave top flattening when signal level is not excessive (indicating clipping caused by another application), to flash the system tray icon prompting the user to go lower the volume somewhere upstream the signal way.
While this is still on my list of possible features, I recommend to switch to Pulseaudio. Many soundcards are also properly configured to avoid clipping, and also in Pulseaudio you can much easier avoid to touch the relevant controls that cause clippings.
