Description Hugh Warrington 2006-01-24 18:20:07 UTC
Version: 3.4 (using KDE 3.4.0, compiled sources)
Compiler: gcc version 3.4.3
OS: Linux

Create a new event on a Monday. Set it to recur daily and end after 7 occurrences. Click 'ok'. Correctly, there is an occurrence each day for a week. Now edit the event again. Set one of the dates in the week to be an exception. Click 'ok'. There are now only 6 occurrences. Surely an occurrence should be added on the next Monday to keep the total number of occurrences as specified.

Try setting all 7 days of the week to be exceptions. When you click ok, the event disappears! (I wonder where it has gone...)

No, the iCalendar specification (RFC 2445) says that the occurence count is
before exceptions are applied.

RFC 2445 specifies "a common format for openly exchanging calendaring
and scheduling information across the Internet". It need not dictate
user interface design.

I believe that counting an excepted date as contributing towards a
total number of occurrences is not what a human user would intuitively
expect. It means that a non-occurrence counts as an occurrence. I
think given the constraints

1) An event occurs for the first time on the 1st of January
2) From the start date, this event recurs daily, but does not occur on the 2nd
2) This event occurs 5 times in total

a common conclusion would be that the event occurs on the 1st, 3rd,
4th, 5th and 6th of January.

The present situation in KOrganizer is that it is not clear that an
excepted date still counts towards the total number of occurrences.
Whether or not this behaviour is desirable is a separate issue. My
suggestion is that either

a) (preferably) next to the present 'End after x occurrences' a tick
box is added, labelled 'include excepted occurrences as counting
towards total' or similar; or
b) that the present label 'End after x occurrences' is altered to 'End
after x occurrences including excepted occurrences' or similar. It
wouldn't hurt to make the default behaviour explicit.

I hope you find these suggestions helpful.

Regards,
Hugh

Reassigning all KOrganizer bug reports and wishes to the newly created
korganizer-devel mailing list.

This bug has only been reported for versions before 4.14, which have been unsupported for at least two years now. Can anyone tell if this bug still present?

If noone confirms this bug for a Framework-based version of korganizer (version 5.0 or later, as part of KDE Applications 15.08 or later), it gets closed in about three months.

Just as announced in my last comment, I close this bug. If you encounter it again in a recent version (at least 5.0 aka 15.08), please open a new one unless it already exists. Thank you for all your input.
