Description Wim Lewis 2006-01-05 23:47:05 UTC
Version: KMail 1.9 (Using KDE 3.5.0) (using KDE KDE 3.5.0)
Installed from: OpenBSD Packages
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (propolice)
OS: OpenBSD

When retrieving mail from an IMAP mailbox, I can press the button in the lower-right corner of the window (next to the progress bar / cylon indicator) to bring up or dismiss some more detailed info on the fetch operation. This is nice. Unfortunately, if I left that status window up, then every time I read a new message and kmail fetches its contents from the server, I get a stack of "fetching message contents" messages in the corner, obscuring the message I want to read. There's no way to dismiss these (the red X button does nothing) and no obvious way to turn off the behavior.

I eventually figured out that they can be disabled by waiting until I have some new mail, so that the "check for new mail" operation takes some time; then I have the opportunity to dismiss the status window for the fetch operation. This indirectly causes kmail to stop popping up status windows for individual messages later on.

There should be a way to disable the individual-message status popups directly.

I can confirm this on kmail 1.9.6 using KDE 3.5.6 on FreeBSD 6.2 (RELENG_6). It has been an issue for several releases now, but has been sidelined by other IMAP issues I've been having with kmail so I haven't reported it.

If I force a mail check from my imap server then I get the up arrow button next to the statusbar in the bottom-right corner of the kmail window with a down-arrow button next to it. If I don't press the down-arrow button before the detailed progress dialogs go away, then whenever I load a new folder, or a new message I get the detailed progress dialogs with NO down-arrow button to dismiss them. I have to do something like force a mail check to get the down arrow button back. I don't even get a down-arrow on folders that take several seconds to load.

Progress dialog with the down arrow button while doing a mail check

This is a screenshot of kmail 1.9.6 in KDE 3.5.6 on FreeBSD 6.2 doing a forced
mail check from an IMAP server. I have clicked the up-arrow button to get a
detailed progress dialog.

Progress dialog without the down arrow button while changing folders

System/version as per previous screenshot attached. This is changing to a
folder with only a couple of messages. If I change to a folder with thousands
of messages then sometimes (it seems inconsistent) I get the down arrow button,
and sometimes I don't.
