Description francisco pena 2005-12-24 00:40:51 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.0)
Installed from: Ubuntu Packages

Start with a fresh installation of Kubuntu Breezy (KDE 3.4).

.

Original "System Menu" (next to the K menu)

Mouse Over displays balloon: "System"/ "Easy access to system places"

Menu Contents:
Item _______________ linked to address
Home folder ________ "/home/username"
Storage media ______ "media:/"
Remote Places ______ "remote:/"
Settings ___________ "settings:/"
Trash ______________ "trash:/"

.

Upgraded to kde 3.5.

.

After the upgrade, the system menu is:

Mouse Over displays balloon: "System"/ "Easy access to system places"

Menu Contents:
Item _______________ linked to address
Home folder ________ "system:/home"
Storage media ______ "system:/media"
Remote Places ______ "system:/remote"
Trash ______________ "system:trash"
User Folders _______ "system:/users"

.

Apparently no problems, but:

This change is responsible for a reported 'bug' that I read about in the Kubuntu Forums where the contents of the "Storage Media" was empty after the upgrade and the solution was to change priviledges by modifying "/etc/defaults/hal" file, which adds the content to the "system:/media" location. The contents of the "media:/" folder are still in the computer (good), it's just not linked to from the system menu anymore.

Here are the messages in the Kubuntu forum:
http://www.kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=2092.0
http://www.kubuntuforums.net/forums/index.php?topic=846.0

This "system:/media" folder also lacks functionality (once 'corrected' by modifying the 'hal' file) it no longer displays used/free space when mouse over.

The "media:/" folder is still present (just no longer linked to) and still has the same functionallity as before upgrading to kde 3.5.

.

The "system:/home" that is used in the new kde 3.5 doesn't have the 'shared' tab when right click on file then properties is selected.

Before the upgrade to Kde 3.5 it was linked to "/home/username" which allowed all the functionallity. The folder is (of course) still present, just not linked to from the system menu anymore.

.

Same goes for the remaining items on the system menu.

.

My interest would be: to either bring back the previous system menu links or to tell me/us how to change the individual icons to link to the previous (3.4) locations.

Thanks for reading this.

The feature is as intended. And the HAL misconfiguration is not something we can fix.

So, not a KDE bug.
