Description Victor-Philipp Busch 2005-12-15 15:59:49 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.5.0)

I use my KDE on work and private. My work-KDE is on the same notebook, but is very complex in my opinion. I start automatically konqueror (in fullscreen and with a fixed workprofile on desktop 1), kontact and kopete (witout window decorations and with a fixed geometry on desktop 2) and a konsole (in fullsreen too, on desktop 3). Anymore starts 15 tools in the systemtray.

I wish me a possibility to start KDE with a configurable profile to configure an easy KDE for private using.

this is a bit hairy ... session restoration is done by the session manager, ksmserver.
unfortunately, there is no protocol for letting kdm know what session profiles the session manager knows and later passing the choice to the session manager. a kde-specific solution would be possible, but not very nice.
a simple, but not particularly user-friendly solution would be keeping kdm out of the game and letting the session manager pop up a selection window once the session is initiated.

Hm, I think it should be a goal for one of the next KDE-releases. Today I start an WM (ION3) for private use of KDE-applications, but I don't have a desktop then and no systemtray with the main-applications like kmix or klipper :((

Which session manager do you mean?

What exactly do you expect this "profile" to be?
Comment 4 Oswald Buddenhagen 2006-01-17 19:44:08 UTC
i think he just means a checkpointed XSMP session. ksmserver can do this, there is just no sensible way to select a checkpoint for restoration; you can only pre-configure "empty", "previous", "manually saved".
Comment 5 Victor-Philipp Busch 2006-01-17 20:11:51 UTC
I need "only" a way to start a KDE-Session with other application-settings, for example without three desktops and without an automatically start of a konsole in fullscreen-mode (I need this only on my work).
Comment 6 Oswald Buddenhagen 2006-01-17 20:49:27 UTC
argh, that' slightly more sophisticated, as you need not only different session setups, but also different option sets.
if you want the home setup *strictly* separated from the work setup, you could just go with two different $KDEHOMEs (~/.kde and ~/.kde-work) and have a user-defined session type that presets the env var(s) accordingly.
anyway, this isn't the first request for such a feature, so we might want to think about a real solution at some point ...
Comment 7 Victor-Philipp Busch 2006-01-17 22:11:36 UTC
Yes, I want this! :) But I need a sharing of data like kontacts and kopetechats between KDE-private and KDE-work - finally I use konqueror, kopete or kmail private and at work...
Comment 8 Oswald Buddenhagen 2007-04-11 13:09:22 UTC
so in the end this is a kconfig request. see also http://lists.kde.org/?l=kde-devel&m=116850811619176&w=2
not sure about an appropriate gui ... i haven't come up with one for kcm_kdm for six years.
