Description greatbunzinni 2005-11-13 00:07:03 UTC
Version: 1.8.3 (using KDE KDE 3.4.3)

If a user has multiple accounts configured in KMail, it is expected that the user can send emails from the configured accounts. In KMail it isn't possible to do that. If a user writes a new mail, there isn't an option to choose from what account to send the email from.
Comment 1 Thiago Macieira 2005-11-13 00:58:23 UTC
View, Identity. That doesn't work for you?
Comment 2 greatbunzinni 2005-11-14 21:25:10 UTC
Yes it does. Kind of. And it seems that "view"->"From" also works to some extent.

But what about the "accounts" settings? Is there a way for a user to specify what account to use to send emails? I have a couple of accounts there and it seems that it isn't possible to specify that, at least from the "Composer" dialog.

isn't there a way to specify from what account to send a mail?

I guess you mean "View - Transport"?

Oh I feel silly... Sorry about that. Thanks for the help

No reason to feel silly. This is definitely a big usability bug. This should be adressed. I had the same problem some time ago.

It seems like Kmail has so many things like this. It has the actual functionality in it, but it is just kinda strange how it does things and not very intuitive.

The "from" input should just be the "identity" drop down. Do people usually just write whatever from email they want? I don't think I have ever needed to do that.

I don't see any need to reopen a 18 years old bug because kmail doesn't work the way *you* want.

Can we please address the fact that when writing a new email a new user using Kmail won't be able to see which email they can use to send an email with.

It is normal in pretty much every single email client I have ever used that you have a drop down.

Kmail does in fact have this "identity" drop down you just have to enable it.

Currently it has a input box rather than a drop down.

All I am saying is switch it around and people would be far less confused.

This is for sure a usability bug at the very least.

Again, this is your point of view. Most users only have one identity set up and showing this dropdown menu by default would waste space for them.

What is missing however is the selection of aliases addresses when they exist. This is already reported (https://bugs.kde.org/show_bug.cgi?id=400851)

The drop down for identities takes up the same space as a single input slot so what you are saying doesn't make sense to me.

identity versus from

The "identity" drop down is an actual selection of what email you want to send from.

The "From" is just a input box you would need to type.

This doesn't make sense.
