Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.92) Installed from: Gentoo Packages OS: Linux I have 5 accounts with different protocols in my kopete client and when my internet connection fails I get 5 error messages that I can't connect. I think it would be enough to get one that informs me, that my internet connection is down (maybe even as a tooltip in the statusbar like the status notifications). I think this could be done, if all protocols could not connect to their server. Or maybe a list of failed connections could be displayed, like: "Following protocols failed to connect: ICQ (nr) AIM (id) Connection will be established if possible!" <- the last one, only if auto connect is enabled. After that, the user doesn't get any new "connection failed" messages until the connection was established once.
only 5? that's nice. I got used to getting a few dozen if kopete was disconnected from msn while I was afk; possibly a *lot* more if I was gone for the whole day. I'd get home and have to tap the space bar constantly for several minutes >.< ...but I don't know if that's been fixed in svn, because it hasn't happened recently. perhaps I should test it.
It would be great if those error messages could be disabled (kopete could silently try to reconnect every 30 seconds, blinking the status icon (gray/color). I have only two accounts (Jabber, MSN), though connection error messages are really annoying. Using 0.12-beta2 on KDE 3.5.2
Please consider extreme conditions, like: - Working out of office or home, were networks are jammed and loose connections. - Working on wireless network, where one may frequently get out of access points reach, like using laptop at university library. - Running a IM protocol over VPN or ssh tunnel, that may not be connected or may not stay connected often. - Or a day when IT department is doing a lot of maintenance on network... - Even worse, using old fashioned dial up, but disconnecting often to save money :-) !
Like to add another wish on the same subject: Kopete should not try to connect when there is no internet connection at startup, e.g. when I start my laptop out of reach of any network. It's about the same wish as above, still slightly different. But it would keep the error messages away...
error messages should at least be presented to the user in a consistent way. currently icq/aim displays passive popups while msn shows two (TWO!) intrusive dialog boxes. it would be nice if passive popups were used for every protocol. or, even better, just one passive popup listing the connections that failed.
I agree - those dialog boxes must die! but I can never remember where they come from... and when they do show up, I'm always too busy to care.
I can confirm it's a recurrent and annoying problem.
Confirming bug still exists in KDE 4.5.1.
Dear user, unfortunately Kopete is no longer maintained. Please migrate to another solution, e.g. for Jabber a possibility is Kaidan, for Matrix a candidate is NeoChat.
