Comment 1 Fred Schättgen 2005-11-22 12:36:40 UTC
I can confirm this for the 3.5-rc1 (Kubuntu packages).
I tried hard to come up with a simple scenario to reproduce it, but with no success so far.
The wrong alignment seems to happen most likely with certain settings though:
- File previews enabled
- Additional panel on the left
- Long filenames. I played around with a set of files call test_test_t.txt, test_test_te.txt, test_test_tes.txt etc.

If the icons are lined up vertically and kdesktop and kicker is restarted you can see the icons move two times.
First they are *almost* correctly placed (some are a few pixels off, but still the right column). Then, when kicker appears, they often jump one row. If the additional panel appears, they jump again. Sometimes they go to the wrong column at first, only to jump back to the right place afterwards. But sometimes they get it wrong on the second time...

I've noticed that in ~/.kde/share/apps/kdesktop/IconsPositions the x-coordinates of the icons are usually not identical, even if they are aligned in one single row. Shouldn't the x-positions be the same in that case?

Another thing I've noticed is that when you move kicker from bottom to the left (with no additional panels), then the distance of the icons *from the top* changes slightly. I don't think there is any good reason for them to do that.
And changing the orientation of kicker scrambles the icon layout quite reliably btw., even with no previews and short filesnames.

Seems to be a dupe of 117868 which I fixed today.
Re Comment #1: If you have "align to grid" activated, then it is clear why the position from the top changes when moving a panel from bottom to left, as you change the available horizontal and vertical space, so the grid is recalculated to arrange the icons evenly in both directions.
