Description Oliver Grimm 2005-10-06 01:12:26 UTC
Version: 1.3 (using KDE KDE 3.4.1)
Installed from: Debian testing/unstable Packages
OS: Linux

It would be really great if it was possible in KDVI to "increment-jump" to a page.

Right now I hit "g" for "go to page", then type "30" and hit enter. For this I usually use the num pad. Today it just came to my mind to type "+10" and ENTER at the num pad after I had pushed the "page down" key about ten times to somewhat navigate in a huge DVI file in full scren mode. Unfortunately this was not possible yet.

Please add such a feature which allows for typing in "+10" or "-23" for a relative jump between pages.

Thank you, for your suggestion.

I'm not quite sure, if it is a good idea to add this feature to the goto page
dialog. But I have played with the thought of adding vi-like keybindings to
KDVI. Which would mean typing

"12g" would jump to page 12,

typing

"5n" would jump to currentpage + 5,
"5p" would jump to currentpage - 5, and so on.

But this has quite a low priority, since there are still many more
pressing issues to solve.

Greetings,
Wilfried Huss.

Thanks for your quick reply.

Personally I don't use vi so I don't see much need for using vi-like bindigs. I proposed the "+5" syntax because

- it seems to be most intuitive for me
- it's faster to navigate since the keys are much closer to each other and you won't even need two fingers.

No problem if this is not implemented immediately. I just thought, it might be a good one to keep in mind.

I like the vim idea. Actually the 5n, 5p idea has already been implemented into xdvi (another dvi file viewer).

yes and it would just be great to have it implemented into kdvi_part. I might volunteer on this topic if you would contact me: (ikrabbe.ask at web de).

But even more pressing is a simple change that should first be implemented and might be implemented into the goto dialog: Setup a page offset. When viewing big documents finding something is at p280 in the index and jumping to 280 goes to 269 since there are 11 offset pages this is quite annyoing and quite easy to tune in.

This feature also holds for all kviewparts (since it's the same for pdf and ps documents or whatever).

Dear Ingo,

sorry for the long silence ---I am awfully busy this week, my job drives me
crazy. I would very much enjoy if you would volunteer. But now, I have to run
and catch a train. May I contact you again early next week?

Sorry again for not being responsive,

Stefan.

Is KDVI still maintained? If not, this bug should be reassigned to Okular, which also lacks this feature.
Comment 7 Tristan Miller 2010-03-05 15:22:17 UTC
I have raised this issue for Okular as Bug 229552.
Comment 8 Jekyll Wu 2013-09-28 13:42:19 UTC
kdvi is no longer maintained since KDE SC 4, and its functionality is replace by okular. If the issue in this report still exists in or apply to okular in KDE SC 4.10.5 or higher, please reassign the report to okular product or create a new report against okular.
