Description Peter Lezoch 2005-09-08 19:25:46 UTC
Version: 3.2.2 (using KDE KDE 3.4.2)
Installed from: SuSE RPMs
Compiler: gcc 3.2.3
OS: Linux

in toplevel mode if you open a second kwrite editor window, the first window looses the capability to copy and past: means that on right button mouse click no popup opens. it looks as if only one editor window is supported ( the last one that was opened ).

TopLevel has been broken since the port to Qt3.. (yes, 3)
Comment 2 Peter Lezoch 2005-09-10 08:46:06 UTC
To: jens dagerbo and the kdevelop team

This is NOT a problem of qt3, but a problem in the team's approach to it. When an IDE, after 2.5 years of development, is NOT able to copy 1 (ONE) line of code from one window to the other, it should be considered to be a deadborn child!
I tried to configure and MAKE kdevelop-2.1.4 using qt-3.3.4 and kde-3.4.2, and, what a shocking experience, most of the toplevel part is working. I didn't do anything else but './configure' and 'make' and it took me not more than half an hour. And the result is: toplevel is NOT broken and even so complicated actions as 'copy and paste' seem to work without problems!!!!!
Does the kdevelop team make any statement about this facts ??

Kind regards

Peter Lezoch

1. we never said this was a problem with Qt3.
2. KDevelop 2.1.4 is very old.
3. KDevelop 2.1.4 did not use the KMDI libraries which would explain why it's not broken.
4. Since you're using SUSE rpms of kdevelop, it's possible that patches they apply to their version of Qt could cause these problems.

The fact that KDevelop 2.1.x compiled fine and that you get some level of support for it (website pages about KDevelop2.x + 15000 posts on the forum) expresses the KDevelop team view of support. We provide you with information and software way beyond the "normal" life cycle of it. Do you know of any other software project where you can get that level of support ? Which ?

If you are happy with KDevelop 2.1.x then fine, use it. We are happy that you are happy with it.

But current development is focused on KDevelop 3.4.
KDevelop 3.3 beta1 should be released shortly.
