Version:           1.8.2 (using KDE 3.4.2, Gentoo)
Compiler:          gcc version 3.4.4 (Gentoo 3.4.4-r1, ssp-3.4.4-1.0, pie-8.7.8)
OS:                Linux (i686) release 2.6.12-nitro5-Eros

I checked the Leaving mails on the server option in Kmail. 

The mails received by Kmail cannot be retrieved again when I opened thunderbird later.  However when I log onto the mail server I find the mails are there.  

The mails received by Kmail are perhaps set some flags so that Thunderbird does not receive them again :(   So I cannot receive 
mails everywhere ...    If I open Thunderbird first and then Kmail, 
the problem does not exist.

Can't be a KMail problem, since POP3 doesn't even have flags that KMail could set.
