Then, open it again: the continuous lines are now broken (I assume at column 78 or so). If you type words in the first line, you will get "orphan words" the following line. I confirm this is still true in KMail 1.9.x (here, 1.9.3 from Etch).
The problem is still there in KMail 1.9.6 (enterprise), in KDE 3.5.8 coming with Kubuntu Gutsy (7.10). :-(
Still an issue in KMail 1.11.0 (KDE 4.2.0, Kubuntu 8.10).
