Description William Kendrick 2005-06-27 08:23:05 UTC
Version: 3.4.1 (using KDE 3.4.1, Debian Package 4:3.4.1-1 (3.1))
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.6 (Debian 1:3.3.6-5)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.8-2-686

It would be nice to be able to right-click form submission buttons on web pages to access actions such as "Open In New Window" and "Open In New Tab". Thanks!

Context menus for buttons sound like a very strange concept.

Not really! There are many cases where I want to keep reading a web page, but vote in some poll that's visible on the page's sidebar. I could open the voting results in a new tab, and then close it and keep reading, without having to navigate back and forth.

More importantly, there are some sites that for no apparent reason force the form submit to be in a new window. So, for example, when I'm visiting the revenue reports on various banner ad networks I'm part of, which I usually do all at once in multiple tabs, there's one that opens a new window when I click the form button to view a report.

With my idea for a "this link will open in a new window" mouse pointer hint icon (similar to the current "this is a mailto link" one we have now), I will be able to more easily manage where pages go, even if the designers of the website are stupid.

Finally, some sites use form buttons to invoke a file download. Being able to treat that form button more like a normal "<a href>" link to the file would be useful.

My point is that people don't expect context menus for buttons, so implementing it (that way) would only benefit maybe 0.1% of users who discover it by accident.

That's not a very good argument. ;^) In KDE almost _anything_ seems to be right-clickable. (I just discovered last night that some of the icons in my systray are actually middle-clickable, as well. Amarok pauses/unpauses, for example.)

My reasoning, as I was using Konqueror that day, was: "Well, I can right-click a link to open it in a new tab... I wonder if I can right-click this annoying form submit button that I'd like to appear in a new tab?"

Additionally, middle-clicking links open them in new tabs or windows, so why not form buttons? New features have to be added at some point. ;^) I don't see how this is less discoverable than any other right- or middle-clickable object anywhere else in KDE. The fact that is NOT right-clickable actually seems unnatural to _me_! :^)

Now, I can understand if this would be _technically_ difficult to achieve (and maybe depend on some changes in Qt rather than Konqueror and/or KDE), but I hope I'm convincing you that it's not a _bad idea_! :^)

Dear user,

KHTML (and KJS) was a long time more or less unmaintained and got removed in KF6.

Please migrate to use a QWebEngine based HTML component.

We will do no further fixes or improvements to the KF5 branches of these components beside important security fixes.

For security issues, please see:

https://kde.org/info/security/

Sorry that we did not fix this issue during the life-time of KHTML.

Greetings
Christoph Cullmann
