The advantage: you can see several similar mailing lists in different views. In "suse" you could sort all messages by incoming date and see all the new messages at once. In the subfolders "suse-kde", "suse-laptop" and "suse-announce" you could prefer the threaded view and follow the discussions in context. This option must not be the default, but it would be a nice extension.
How about using a search folder for the view over the single folders? This should allow doing what you're looking for.

Search in all those folders, give the search a name, save, a search folder ("virtual folder") will appear.
Thanks, this actually works. But the virtual folder is not in the line. Will it cost processing time? My suggestion would IMHO be a little more logical ;-)

Another observation: when I delete duplicates in the search folder, they are not deleted in the real folders.
