Description Dik Takken 2005-06-12 22:57:25 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.1)
Installed from: Gentoo Packages
OS: Linux

The functions 'Enlarge Font' and 'Shrink Font' are not typical toolbar actions that you need very often. Can they be removed please?

Also, the 'Close' button does not make much sense on the toolbar, especially because KWrite isn't a multi-document application like Kate is.

Removing 'Enlarge Font' and 'Shrink Font' makes sense for Kate as well, I guess.

Actually, I use it a lot. Anyway, you can edit the toolbars (Settings->Configure Toolbars) and remove them.

best,
Jeroen

I'm sure there are people out there that use these actions a lot. If everyone would add his own 'critical' actions to the toolbar, the toolbar would become a copy of the main application menu.

So, the question is if 'Enlarge Font' 'Shrink Font' and 'Close' are critical to a large number of users or not. I guess not, but the only way to be sure is to conduct a survey of some kind...

Just edit the toolbars.

I agree that a single user can easily edit the toolbar to suit his own taste. However, cleaning up the toolbars is a good idea, and I think the increase/decrease font size are the first candidates for removal. I'm not so sure about close, because it represents the only way currently to reuse a kwrite window, a possibility that is not obvious.

Personally, 'crowded' toolbars are no problem. However, in my experience, many users find the crowded toolbars very intimidating and it takes them more time to find the tool they are looking for. That is why I manually remove *all* unnecessary toolbar icons from *all* applications for *all* user accounts. Whenever KDE is upgraded, the toolbars jump to 'crowded mode' again and I have to clean them again.

Users who are comfortable with the KDE desktop will surely know about the 'Edit Toolbar' functionality and add any icons they want. We cannot expect new users to do this, so the most logical thing would be to have the toolbars simple and clean be default.

I vote for keeping they are *THE* toolbar actions i most use, actually it's the only ones i use as i know the keyboard shortcut for all the others :D
