Description raditzman 2005-06-12 08:02:14 UTC
Version: (using KDE KDE 3.4.1)
Installed from: Unlisted Binary Package
Compiler: gcc version 3.3.5 (Debian 1:3.3.5-8ubuntu2)
OS: Linux (i686) release 2.6.10-5-686

Perhaps it is akregator that should be joined to konqueror and not the other way around, because the konqueror in akregator is limited in two points:
1-It doesn't play videos or display images in the "embebbed" view, even if konqueror is configured to do so.
2-Doesn't have the same features as konqueror which sometimes could be usefull(copy-to menu, archive page, etc) , forcing you to open the page in an external link..

Which makes you wonder, if perhaps instead of adding features to the "konqueror" inside akregator, why not make akregator a sidebar-plugin of konqueror, and embeb konqueror+plugin in kontact?
Perhaps the second part could be difficult, but making a akregator sidbar for konqueror could be really nice.

i like this idea, namely sidebar-plugin - akregator in kontact doesn't belong into kontact there is no use for it
it could also add "live bookmarks" feature as in firefox and maybe better placememt of rss icon like recent opera's adress bar

I am also pondering about better RSS integration in Konqueror. This needs more input though, especially from Konqueror developers and usability guys. As Konqueror's UI afaik will undergo major changes for KDE4, we need to think how to include syndication in there in a usable way, without cluttering the konq UI even more. I am not thinking about dropping the standalone UI completely, but Akregator could be made more modular, so a Konq sidebar could reuse things like the feed list or the article list.

Just adding my vote for this - loading an image link as an embedded image in the stand-alone aKregator really seems like basic functionality, even if aKregator isn't by design an image display program.

Whether you want javascript commands/links to work in aKregator the same as Konqueror (based on how it's defined for Konqueror in the Konqueror preferences) is another issue. I don't see much harm in it, though - if it's used in Konqueror, it can be assumed that we want to use it in aKregator as well, e.g. a javascript command for opening a new window could open that in a new tab.

Perhaps one should start thinking about an "universal" sidebar, separated of konqueror or any other app, in which when each 'link' was clicked (wether a mount point in 'media' sidebar, or a 'news' in a 'akregator' sidebar, or a music in amarok sidebar, the respective kpart should expand to the side to show the relevant information/functionality, or the relevant dcop action get executed (for amarok).

That is, not opening konqueror for file browsing in the first case, or konqueror for web browsing in the second but embebing the kparts if necessary, or just acting upon the system via dcop/dbus.

This is so that you don't just get a 'nice' shortcut list, but a true comprehensive and global universal toolbox... If you really then want to open it as an application, maybe you may have a button which shows 'launch <app>', but this is one area I still don't know how to work out, I think we need more brainstorming regarding the role of apps, tools, toolboxes, and universal toolbox and everything about desktop usability and the best "way" to use a computer to do what you want, as effortless and seamless as possible... I think we should investigate our competitors for that, namely the google sidebar, aswell the vista (if they haven't taken it out, that is).

dan

p.s. - nice discussion, by the way.

p.p.s.- some obvious candidates for being in such an universal toolbox would be new mail messages, new to-dos, calendar, clock, rss reader, music player, app launchers, trafic analyzer, etc. This is definitely sounding more and more like Next, eh? I guess we have to discard the idea of the taskbar all together , because it shouldn't matter for the user if the app is running or not, only that when he when he wants to use it, its there, and when its not its not ocupping more than the space it did previously... I think that was the idea behing the squares of NEXT and icons of macox. This discussion might have to go to the brainstorm area of things. When will we have that ??????

Um, is this old report still valid for KDE4? Or should I file a new one?

I like akregator to be part of kontact, but I also miss the right-mouse-button menu from konqueror. I have added some things there, like an entry to start my video download script, and it would be nice if I could use this in akregator, too.
