How about introducing search domains, a list of popular places where the user might want to look, like:

* Personal files ($HOME)
* Entire filesystem
* Temporary Files
* Trash Can
* ...

Most users want to search only their personal files, so this might be the default domain. Having this default domain also makes searching files much faster and it will yield less useless hits.

When HAL support in KDE is growing up a bit, more domains could be added dynamically, like:

* Sandisk USB memory stick
* CD-ROM disk 'backup december 2003'
